“Help us to help you! English Language Support in Departments” Dr Diane Rossiter Supporting the Supporters 2008
Contents • Context • Year 1 – What? How? Impact? • Year 2 – What? How? Impact? • Conclusions
Context Dr Pitt identified main issues for Year 1 & 2 students in report writing are not being able to: 1) Express their own opinion about their results; they look to the textbook for all the answers rather than observing and interpreting the results from the experiments which may or may not coincide with the textbook results.2) Being able to take information from text and paraphrase rather than verbatim copying. 3) Follow the guidance provided in the Manual. • 36% overseas students in our current Year 1 - previous years some found report writing challenging. • Bid to ELTC for 8 hours support granted.
Year 1 – What? How? Impact? • What? Development of Lab Report Writing Skills • How? 1 x 1.5 hrs workshop with 9 (out of 70) students • Organisation? Recruit students, liaise with Alice, timetable slot/book room, provide lab report manual. • Attendance? 11 booked out of 70 and 9 attended • Impact? Positive feedback from students ($1.4) – all found the session helpful in preparing their lab reports. • Improvements? More sessions requested; provide some exemplars.
Year 2 – What? How? Impact? • What? Development of Pilot Plant Report Writing Skills • How? 2 x 1.5 hrs workshop with up to 5 (out of 65) students plus some 1-to-1 sessions follow-up • Organisation? Recruit students, liaise with Alice, timetable slot (not easy for Year 2)/book room, provide pilot plant manual. • Attendance? Session 1 = 3, Session 2 = 5 out of 65 • Impact? Majority of students who attended both sessions showed significant improvement in marks for reports after the sessions (see Table 2).

Conclusions • Evidence that Year 1 and 2 students have benefitted from support from ELTC (Alice Lawrence). • This support was provided within the Department and taylored to our specific needs. • Intend to develop level of support for next year and “target” students who will be required to attend rather than making it optional.
