  5. More LEP information • Back of cumulative folder has a section identifying LEP students as either LEP/Exit.

  6. Student is tested with Language Proficiency Test WAPT/ACCESS to determine if LEP. If scores below 5-Bridging in any section of WAPT (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing) student will place in ESL program. Team decision (parent, teachers, ESL teacher) will draw type of services (All LEP students will receive Direct Services) ACCESS takes place every Spring to measure student language proficiency growth. TESTING

WIDA (ELD ) English Language Development Standards • Resource guide used to link language learning with state academic content standards. • To be used by ESL teachers and classroom teachers because ALL teachers are language teachers. • Language objectives using listening, speaking, reading and writing

Content Area teachers will receive the following information from ESL teacher WIDA ELP Standards report stating student current level of language proficiency, samples of language objectives for math, language arts, science, social studies and social and instructional language. Can do descriptors explaining student proficiency levels Classroom accommodations (team decision) Testing accommodations if applicable (team decision) On going support like teaching strategies, etc.

Modify Instruction to increase comprehension • Use visuals, pictures, (multimedia: powerpoints, mimio, Elmo, smartboard, videos, clips, transparencies, websites, books on tape and video) • Hands on activities • Teach concrete information • Use thinking maps with visuals • Demonstration • Provide copies of concrete material (simplified teacher notes)

  18. Vocabulary Classify vocabulary in Tiers: • TIER 1- basic words to communicate, read, write. • TIER 2- information processing words, polysemous words, transition words. • TIER 3 –Subject specific words that label content discipline concepts

  21. Federal law is very clear that no LEP child should be retained where language is the reason for the retention. ESL LAW

Parental Involvement • Home visit • Meet with parents and go over rules, expectations, homework folder, field trips etc. with interpreter , home packets, holiday themes • Validate language and culture • Multicultural reading materials • Multicultural crafts • Invite parents to share culture, songs, food. • Read in L1.

  23. Cultural Differences Hispanics do not make eye contact when being disciplined as a sign of respect. Hispanics kiss on cheek and hug when greeting. Hispanic parents do not question teacher’s academic decisions regarding their children. Teachers are placed in a very high hierarchy in Hispanic culture. Hispanics are touchy people and keep very close proximity to others. Hispanic concept of time Hispanics concept of respect Extended family system Collective/group identity Asians are not to be touched on the head for religious reasons. Boys and girls are in separated schools in Pakistan. (Do not place brothers and sisters in the same class)

  26. INTERPRETERS We have a list of local Spanish interpreters/translators to be used by schools when needed at no charge to them. Ask your ESL teacher/Administrator when needed We contract with FLUENT language solutions for all other languages upon school request, at no charge to them. Ask your ESL teacher/Administrator
