  1. Accessible Home Vital Signs Monitoring System Group 22 BME 272 Kristyn Eilertsen Adam Goodale Stephen Kepper Sunil Narayan Stacey Tarver

  2. Problem Statement • Multimodal home vital signs monitor • Body temperature • Weight • Blood pressure • Heart rate • Respiration rate • Blood oxygen level

  3. Patient Challenges • Must accommodate patients with varying disabilities • Blind • Deaf • Elderly • Bed ridden • Motor movement challenged • Little technology experience

  4. Requirements • User friendly • Cost effective • Visual usage • Audio usage • Large responsive user interface • Compact • Aesthetically pleasing

  5. Data Transmission • Device must acquire data • Must transmit information to outside source • Must be accessible to physicians and health care providers

  6. Limitations • Unable to acquire weight information on bed ridden patients • Cannot cost over $2000 (project fund) • Must be completed by end of Spring semester

  7. Project Background • Advisors: Paul King, Ph.D (Dept. of Biomedical Engineering) and Dr. John Enderle, Ph.D (Biomedical Engineering Program Director and Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering) • The growing number of elderly people means even more stress will be placed on emergency rooms • Currently at home vital systems or personal nurses are too expensive for everyone to use

  8. Importance of Home Vital Monitoring System • Provide cost effective health care • Prevent over burdening hospital emergency rooms • Focus on healthcare versus “sick care”

  9. Product Demand • Elderly hospital visits are costly for the patient and often times only precautionary • The growing number of elderly people means even more stress will be placed on emergency rooms • Currently at home vital systems or personal nurses are too expensive for everyone to use

  10. Product Goals • Remote access • Wireless sensors • Voice activated • Voice response • Touch screen • Fast response Touchscreen components Wireless sensors Multiple sensor input

  11. Components • Computer • Software • Data analysis • Voice activation • Voice response • Touch screen • Vital sign devices • Force plate (scale) • Breathing rate sensor • Pulse oximeter • Blood pressure sensor • Temperature probe Weight scale Blood pressure Temperature Breathing rate Pulse oximeter

  12. Estimated Prices • Desktop computer ………………..$ 330.00 • Heart rate sensor …………………$ 91.00 • Blood pressure sensor …………..$ 99.00 • Breathing rate sensor………........$ 58.00 • Weight scale …………………….. $ 199.00 • Temperature probe ………………$ 29.00 • Pulse oximeter ……………………$ 189.00 • Data analysis software …………..$ FREE • Touchscreen software ………….. $ 159.00 • Voice activation software ………..$ 199.00 • TOTAL: $ 1353.00

  13. Current Status • Testing equipment/ software capabilities • Researching inexpensive desktop computers • Designing the most user-friendly setup • Determining software/ sensor provider • PASCO vs. Vernier

  14. Conclusion • In the near Future…. • Purchasing of voice activation, sensor recognition/recording, and possible touch screen software • Preliminary testing of most affective software corresponding to system requirements and already set budget • Design Construction and Testing
