This study explores the periodic nature of Energetic Neutral Atom (ENA) emissions and their connection with solar wind pressure pulses. It also investigates the role of the ring current in generating these emissions and their correlation with auroral activity.

Mitchell et al. (2005) Solar Wind pressure pulse (shock) triggers immediate and delayed ENA response, and delayed SKR response.
Badman et al., 2008 Solar wind compression disrupts the recurrent SKR pattern, which then re-establishes later.
An electric current mapping along Saturn’s magnetic field connects the ring current enhancement with the ionosphere. The current generates electric fields parallel to the magnetic field, accelerates electrons into the atmosphere, and stimulates the UV emission. Titan’s orbit, 20 Rs The emission of Energetic Neutral Atoms from the Ring Current reveals the presence of an acceleration region in the equatorial plane that rotates in lock-step with the bright auroral ultra-violet emission. 8.5 Rs 6 Rs
This line follows the rotating system (SLS extrapolated) This line follows time in the SKR spectrogram Auroral bulge tracks the ring current enhancement. ENA imaging does not resolve possible fine structure (filamentation) in the ring current; longitudinal filamentation could drive multiple pairs of field aligned currents, leading to multiple auroral arcs
Hi Don- I finally got around to making a UVIS only version of the 2008-129 event. I just sent it to you via yousendit.com Feel free to show it at the workshop if you like; and let me send my regards to everyone. I'm impressed by the fact that the oval is not round; I also like the double arc that forms on one side. -Wayne
In addition to activity precipitated by solar wind pressure pulses, Saturn ring current activity shows well defined periodicity at about the SLS3 period (Carbary et al., 2008)
This event, showing rotation of ENA emission over 7 days, remains in synch with Saturn’s rotation throughout.
