Characterised by its high level of urban development, high population density (1,444 inhab. per sq km) and /Km2) and the existence in its hinterland of important cities with their own identities.

Sporadic interventions on a small scale. Recovery of basic aspects. • 1987-1992. Infrastructural interventions and large urban areas developed as a result of the Olympic games. Structuring of the city. • From 1993 on, Barcelona as a central area of the Metropolitan District (Fòrum; 22@; Sagrera;…). Urban recuperation.

4th meeting “Greens in Big Cities” Vienna (Rathaus), October 26th-28th, 2007 Energy efficiency Ecopark and District Heating and Cooling The incinerator plant was transformed into an Ecopark facility for the treatment of waste District Heating and Cooling is based on the use of the steam generated The project involved a 3,5 km network: it will supply hot and cold water to the buildings in and around the area of the Forum 2004
4th meeting “Greens in Big Cities” Vienna (Rathaus), October 26th-28th, 2007 Energy efficiency Environmental values • Energy efficiency improvement: 32% reduction in primary energy consumption; reduction in the consumption of non-renewable resources (= 1,850 tonnes of oil per year) • Reduction in atmospheric pollution: reduction of about 5,000 tonnes of CO2/year
