DigitalGlossary Global Warming & GreenhouseEffect G-Z
G Global warming: an increase in world temperatures, caused by an increase in carbon dioxidearound the Earth. Glaciers:persistentbodies of iceformed by the accumulation of snow. Gas: one of the threefundamentalstates of matter; a substancesuchas air, whichisnotsolid or liquid. Greenhouse: a glassbuilding used forgrowingplants. Greenhouseeffect: the warming of the air around the Earth as a result of the Sun’sheatbeingtrapped by pollution. Greenhousegases: gasesreleased in the atmospherethatabsorb and emitradiation.
H Human activity: human work thatcontributes to upset the balance of the carbon cycle. Heat: an increase in temperature. Hot: having a high temperature.
I Infra-red: infra-red light gives out heatbutcannot be seen. Infraredradiation (I.R.): electromagneticradiation with longerwavelenghtsthanthose of visible light. Imbalance: whentwothings are not the right size in relation to eachother.
M Methane: a chemical compound, the main component of natural gas and also a greenhouse gas. Minimize temperature increase: to diminish the temperature of the Earth.
N Natural causes: happenings produced by nature. Natural greenhousegases: gasesoriginated in nature, whichcushion the earth’ssurface, causing a global heatincrease.
O Ozone: an unstable, poisonousallotrope of oxygen, thatisformednaturally in the ozonelayer. Itis made up of 3 atoms of oxygen. Ozonelayer: itis a layer in the Earth’s atmosphere containing high concentrations of ozone. Thislayerabsorbs ultra-violetradiation. Ozonehole: itis an annualthinning of the ozonelayer over the Antarctic, caused by stratosphericchlorine.
P Pollutants: substanceswhich contaminate the atmospherewith undesiredeffects. Predictability: somethingbehaving or happening in the way thatyouexpect. Pollution: damagecaused to air, water, soil, by harmfulchemicals and waste.
R Recycle: to extractusefulmaterials from garbage or waste. Reduce: to limit, to decrease the quantity of something.
S Sea levels: the levels of the oceansurfaceusedas a standard in reckoning with landelevation or seadepths. Storm: a period of verybadweather with heavyrain, strong wind, and oftenlightning.
W Weather:condition of the atmosphere at a certainplace and time, with reference to temperature and the presence of rain, sunshine, wind. Warm: slightly hot, especially in a pleasant way.
