  2. Electrons and the Periodic table L.O.: Describe the relative energies of s-, p- and d-orbitals for the shells 1, 2, 3 and of the 4s- and 4p-orbitals. Deduce the electron configuration of atoms and ions up to Z = 36. Classify the elements into s-, p- and d-blocks.

  3. Overlap of 4s- and 3d sub-shells

  4. The 4s sub-shell has a lower energy level than the 3d sub-shell. The 4s-orbital fills before the orbitals in the 3d sub-shell.

  5. Write the electronic configuration of: • Li • Be • B • C • Sc • Mg2+ • Cl-
