  1. Warmup Date: Tuesday, February 18, 2014 Objective: SWAT explain the Federalist and Democratic Republican Perspective going into the election of 1800. Question: What kind of qualities make a good role model and student in class?

  2. Team Competition • Every week student teams can earn points towards the “Star of the Week Competition” • Your team earns points when everyone: • Gets right to work- starts the warmup immediately and silently • Stays on task (No prompting from Ms. Houlahan) • Completes the daily homework assignment • Works as team to complete assignments • Encourages and helps all team members • Contributes to the class discussion by asking questions • Receives the highest test/quiz average • Generally impresses Ms. Houlahan with great behavior and respect to others in the class.

  3. Team Competition Your team will not earn points if you ask for a point for something. Your team will be disqualified from the week competition if anyone approaches the point board.

  4. Review • What do Federalists believe in? • What do Democratic-Republicans (Anti-Federalists) believe in?

  5. Alien and Sedition Acts The Alien and Sedition Acts were laws created under John Adam’s presidency (Federalist). They targeted aliens, or citizens who were not yet citizens. The acts did the following things: a. increased the waiting period to become a citizen from 5 to 14 years b. gave the President power to arrest disloyal aliens (immigrants) c. gave the President power to order aliens (immigrants) out of the country during wartime. d. outlawed Sedition—saying or writing anything false or harmful against the government. How would the Federalists feel about this act? How would the Democratic-Republicans feel about this act?

  6. The French Revolution How do you think the Federalists would view this violent revolution? What do you think the Democratic-Republicans would say about this revolution?

  7. Make a Campaign Poster Are you for the Democratic Republicans?--Vote for Thomas Jefferson! or Vote for Aaron Burr! Are you a Federalist? Vote for John Adams! Pick one point of view and make a campaign poster that: • Shows your political ideas • Ideas on the Alien and Sedition Acts or the French Revolution
