Briarwood Elementary • July 5, 2011 • Dear Briarwood Parents and Students: • I hope this letter finds you all having a wonderful summer break. As we approach the start of another school year, I wanted to take a few moments to inform you of a few things that will hopefully ensure a smooth start to the 2011-2012 school year. • The front door will not be unlocked until 7:40 A.M. Students are not to be dropped off prior to 7:40 unless they are a paid participant of the Community Education Morning Program. • Open House will be Sunday, August 7th from 2:00 – 4:00. Parents and students may meet their teachers and tour the classrooms. Kindergarten has a separate open house on Friday, August 5th. (Boys: 4:30-5:00 and Girls: 5:15-5:45). We will also have agenda books ($10), Briarwood T-shirts ($10), and car decals ($5) for sale at open house. Agenda books are to be used by all students in grades 3-6. Please take time to fill out our Emergency Cards at Open House as well. It is imperative that these are filled out correctly and updated when necessary. • A volunteer training will take place following Open House on the 7th. Please remember that if you plan to chaperone a field trip or volunteer in our classrooms, you must have this training and a criminal records check. • The first day of school is Tuesday, August 9th. Students will report directly to their classrooms. Our first morning meeting in the gym won’t take place until Friday, August 12th. • Each school day begins at 8:10. Students that arrive after 8:10 will be considered tardy. Once a child has received a total of 6 unexcused tardies and/or absences, he or she will be considered truant per state law and the court system will be notified. • Parents and other family members are always welcome at Briarwood. However, please remember all visitors must sign in at the front office and receive a visitor’s pass. • Please be patient with the car-rider line for the first week or so of school. It is our goal to have all cars through the car-rider loop in 15-20 minutes, but it will take a little time as new parents and students learn the routine. Always remember that you must use Ironwood (not Steeplechase). It would also be a good idea to write the name of your child on a piece of paper and place it in the dashboard until the staff becomes familiar with your car. • The front sidewalk cannot be used to drop off students, nor may students be allowed to walk in from the parking lot unsupervised. If you do not wish to use bus transportation or the car-rider loop, you must park and walk your child in to the building. • Medication must be brought to school by a parent and be in the original container. A medication form must be completed. Warren County Board Policy prohibits medication from being sent to school by a child. This does include over-the counter medication. • Our Family Resource Center will be conducting a Food Drive at the beginning of the school year. We are asking the following items be donated to help our Briarwood families: Kindergarten-Juices, 1st-soups, 2nd-tuna or chicken canned meat, 3rd-noodles, spaghetti, or pasta sauce, 4th-peanut butter, 5th-canned vegetables or fruits, and 6th-cereals. If you want to bring the items to Open House, we will have an areas to receive them. • Once again, we will have a large number of students. Please understand that it is necessary to follow the guidelines for the safety of all of our students. We are looking forward to an outstanding year. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. I can be reached at 782-5554 or jason.kupchella@warren.kyschools.us. • Sincerely, • Jason Kupchella - Principal Home of the Huskies Jason Kupchella Principal 265 Lovers Lane Bowling Green, KY 42103 Phone: (270) 782-5554 Fax: (270) 746-9264

Attendance Warren County Schools, in cooperation with Mrs. Amy Milliken, Warren County’s Commonwealth Attorney, believes that in order to learn; become productive citizens; and develop good habits that will carry over to their adult life; regular and punctual attendance in school is essential. School starts at 8:10 and ends at 3:10 Please call the school prior to 9:00 A.M. if you child is going to be absent. Follow each absence with a note that includes the date of the absence, the child’s full name, parents name, and cause for absence. Notes are to be presented no later than five days from the date of the absence in order for them to be excused. In the event that a student misses 10 or more days, a statement from the doctor will be necessary in order for the absence to be excused. **The court system does not differentiate between a tardy and an absence. Your child is considered habitually truant and must be referred to the court system after 6 or more unexcused absences/tardies. Attendance Policy – Warren County Board Plicy 4390.01 states that pupils are required to attend school regulary and punctually. 4390.02 states: Any pupil who has been absent from school without a valid excuse for three (3) or more days, or tardy for three (3) or more days without a valid excuse is truant. Absence for less than half a school day without a valid excuse shall be regarded as being tardy. A pupil who has been reported as a truant (3) or more times (absent or tardy nine (9) or more times without a valid excuse) is a habitual truant. Parents will be notified when absences/tardies become a concern. This documentation will begin once a child has three or more unexcused absences/tardies with a phone call or face-to-face conversation. Letters will be sent home on the after 5 unexcused absences/tardies and a home visit will be made on the 6th unexcused absence/tardy. All of this documentation will then be turned over to the Truant Officer of Warren County. A court date will then be assigned by the Court System.

Should you need to take the card home and fill it out, please return the card immediately to school. This information needs to be updated throughout the school year.
