Exercise 9A Medium Level Turns Aim To enter and maintain a medium [ up to 30 degree bank] turn whilst maintaining level flight, then to return to straight and level flight on a new heading
Force's in a turn Centripetal force Lift Weight When banked, the lift is producing a turn force More lift is required in a turn to maintain level flight. More lift can be produced by increasing angle of attack. This will lead to reduction of airspeed if drops to much power will be needed to restore airspeed.
To Enter a turn • Pick- A reference point as a target • Lookout - opposite way first • Roll in- desired bank angle centralise bar • Increase - angle of attack- move bar slightly forward ,to prevent any loss of lift
Method of rolling in Bank angle Roll in Centralise bar Look Maintain level pitch Anticipate roll out Roll wings level
Airmanship • Lookout . Before every turn, lookout by scanning first in the direction opposite of turn the into the intended direction of turn • Drift.- The aircraft will drift downwind during a series of turns, ensure the aircraft is upwind enough of any airspace congested areas. • If turning onto a cross wind track remember to set up a drift angle.
