  2. The Two Sides of the Same Coin! Grace and Mercy

  3. The key concepts in mercy are knowing that we have done wrong, knowing we deserve punishment, and for the one who we have wronged to decide to offer grace instead of justice. Romans 12:1 reminds us that because of God’s mercy we are to live a changed life “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship.” Key Parts of Mercy:

  4. What is Grace? Getting the good things that you do not deserve. What is Mercy? Not getting the punishment that you know you deserve. Definitions:

  5. "No trespassing; violators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law— Sisters of Mercy."

  6. Mercy comes down from heaven to earth so that man by practicing it may resemble God. Giambattista Giraldi (1504-1573) Quotes:

  7. Mercy imitates God and disappoints Satan. Saint John Chrysostom (C. 347-407) Quotes:

  8. Mercy is not for them that sin and fear not, but for them that fear and sin not. Thomas Watson (C. 1557-1592) Quotes:

  9. Can you think of a time when you have wronged someone, or sinned in some way, and you knew you punishment was coming and someone showed you mercy instead? How has that mercy impacted you? In Your Life:

  10. Connected to Psalm 74 Events recorded in 2 Chronicles 36:17-21 Jerusalem is invaded and Jeremiah warned the people but they ignored him. Psalm 79 Context:

  11. O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple, they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble. PS 79:2 They have given the dead bodies of your servants as food to the birds of the air, the flesh of your saints to the beasts of the earth. PS 79:3 They have poured out blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there is no one to bury the dead. Psalm 79 on page 918

  12. 4 We are objects of reproach to our neighbors, of scorn and derision to those around us. PS 79:5 How long, O LORD? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire? 6 Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not call on your name; PS 79:7 for they have devoured Jacob and destroyed his homeland. Psalm 79 on page 918

  13. 8 Do not hold against us the sins of the fathers; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need. Psalm 79:8

  14. 9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name's sake. PS 79:10 Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Before our eyes, make known among the nations that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants. Psalm 79:9-10

  15. 11 May the groans of the prisoners come before you; by the strength of your arm preserve those condemned to die. PS 79:12 Pay back into the laps of our neighbors seven times the reproach they have hurled at you, O Lord. Psalm 79:11-12

  16. Thenwe your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise. Psalm 79:13

  17. What Is Mercy? When Is It Beneficial? Thinking It Through:

  18. If we do not acknowledge our sin then punishment awaits, but God also awaits our prayer asking for mercy. God Is Waiting!

  19. Are you ready to ask God for mercy and accept His grace through surrendering your life to Him in baptism and living a new life? Have you been baptised and need to re-commit your life to Him and follow Him more closely? Where Are You At?

  20. Wherever you are at, will you let us help you grow closer to God? We would love for you to know His mercy and His grace.
