Do we love God as we should? Our Love For God
Matthew 22:34-40 1 Corinthians 16:22 If anyone does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed. O Lord, come! Two Kinds of Love We must love God.
Agape - love that embraces the judgment and deliberate assent of the will as a matter of principle, duty and propriety. Phileo - the emotional aspect of love, the tender affection that we feel. Two Kinds of Love
Most view us as dumb ol’ Christians. • Believe in things we can’t see • Superstitious • Backwards • Anti-science • Anti-learning • Blind faith Agape love is logical and reasoned.
Isaiah 1:18 Come let us reason together says the Lord. Romans 1:18-20 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, Christianity is a religion of logic
Intelligent design theory • Throw ingredients in a closet trillions of times, not once will you get a cake, much less life. • Where did the ingredients come from? • It is more reasonable to believe that God created the universe. Christianity is a religion of logic
It is reasonable to believe in the writers of the New Testament. • Men who died for their faith. • Nothing to gain on this earth. • Their religion was suppressed by the Earth’s lone super power, yet it thrived in the face of persecution. Christianity is a religion of logic
Judgment we make • Commitment we make • As a matter of principle • Sense of duty and propriety Our love for God must be logical, reasoned - like the definition says.
Acts 17:25 Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. Matthew 6:25-34 James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. It is appropriate that we love God; He deserves our love.
Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. God provides for our spiritual need. God restored our fellowship with Him when we didn’t deserve it!
1 John 4:19 - We love Him because He first loved us. Romans 5:6-8 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. He Loved Us First.
1 John 4:9-10 In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. He Loved Us First.
John 14:31 – But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Jesus did the will of the Father, no matter what. Jesus is the perfect example of agape love for God.
Matthew 26:36-44 Luke 22:41-44 He endured the cross at the command of the Father.
1 John 5:3 - For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. John 14:15 - If you love Me, keep My commandments John 14:21 - He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.” Our agape love for God should cause us to be obedient NO MATTER WHAT. Obedience is how God defines our love for Him!
We must be obedient in all aspects of our lives. • Galatians 5:6 - For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. • The apostles and thousands of our brethren in the early church loved God to the point of death. Agape love for God
1 Corinthians 16:22 If anyone does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed. Phileo - the emotional aspect of love, the tender affection that we feel. On the foundation of agape love, we must add phileo love.
Why shouldn’t we have phileo love for God? • Physical blessings • Spiritual blessings • His great love for us
Matthew 22:34-40 1 Corinthians 16:22 If anyone does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed. O Lord, come! We must love God.
