Introduction India-US science collaboration/relationship long and deep and is further strengthened by recent Obama-Singh-Clinton dialogues Recent India advancements in networking within India “startling”. From the NKN web site: “The NKN is a state-of-the-art multi-gigabit pan-India network for providing a unified high speed network backbone for all knowledge related institutions in the country.” See: http://www.nkn.in/ From the Internet2 web site: “…the group proposes the construction of the United States Unified Community Anchor Network (U.S. UCAN), an advanced 100 Gigabit per second network backbone that will link regional networks across the nation…”. See: http://www.internet2.edu/ The India-US Network Enabled R/E Collaboration Workshops build on this exciting new infrastructure in India and the US to strengthen or create new India-US R/E collaborations. India-US Network Enabled Research Collaboration Workshops Workshop #1 – New Delhi, India December 2010 Workshop #2 – Washington, DC March 2012 Objectives: 1. Gather networking professionals and scientists together to facilitate/enable: Better understanding of network CI capabilities and research CI demands. Develop strategies for closer integration of US and Indian network interests. Provide a forum for researcher-researcher interaction to strengthen existing collaborations and build new ones. 2. Report back to our funding agencies (and participants) with specific forward-going recommendations. Details of Workshop #1 and preliminary details of Workshop #2 can be found at: http://internationalnetworking.indiana.edu/ Supported by the National Science Foundation
Select Proposed Workshop #2 Action Items Networking • NKN, ERNET, Internet2, and ESNet hold a series of in-depth technical meetings to consider harmonised implementation of network performance measurement, network planning, dynamic circuits, security, OpenFlow, federated identity, etc., i.e. the whole set of services above the network issues. • Evaluate and identify capacity bottlenecks within India and globally that are inhibiting or limiting high-end research programs and make recommendations accordingly. Supported by the National Science Foundation
Select Proposed Workshop #2 Action Items Science • Bring to the attention of the relevant organisations the advantages of locating nodes of particular science facilities (e.g. LIGO) or data repositories (Geo, Medical) in India. • Propose the formation of a small number of discipline-based working groups where the disciplines are, or will be, reliant on high capacity networks to gain disruptive enhancement to the ways their US-India collaborations evolve (and that are not already well served). These working groups will provide both focus and exemplars for further exploitation. • Publicise the exemplars from both the first and second workshops and identify other areas that may be ripe for exploitation. Supported by the National Science Foundation
Select Proposed Workshop #2 Action Items Education • NKN and ERNET to evaluate the acceptability and practicality of a wide deployment of AVIEW on NKN/ERNET as a low-cost audio visual collaboration and learning environment, that will interact with other brands of AV equipment in which international collaborators have existing heavy investment.
