Non-Negative Rational Numbers Rosa Martinez
TEKS §111.22. Mathematics, Grade 6. (1) Number, operation, and quantitative reasoning. The student represents and uses rational numbers in a variety of equivalent forms. The student is expected to: (A) compare and order non-negative rational numbers
What is a rational number? • A rational number is a number that can be expressed as a fraction or ratio (rational). • The numerator (top) and the denominator (bottom) of the fraction are both integers. numerator = integer denominator integer
When the fraction is divided out, it becomes a terminating or repeating decimal. • (The repeating decimal may be one number or • a billion numbers.) For example: ½ = 0.5 5/8 = 0.625 2/3 = 0.6666666667
Hint: When asked to write a rational number (given in decimal form) as a fraction, "say" the decimal using place value to help form the fraction.
Number Line 1/2 5/2 7/2 If we arrange these fractions in the number line, this is what it would look like….
Number Line 0.6 1.2 2.44 3.6 If we arrange these decimals in the number line, this is what it would look like….
Who likes money???? If you work 8 days, is it better to get paid for 7 days out of the 8 days, or 3 days out of the 8 days? 7/8 or 3/8?
That’s right! Getting paid 7/8 days that you work is more than getting paid for only 3/8. GOOD JOB!
How will rational numbers help you in your everyday life? • Rational numbers will help me….. • know which numbers are bigger. • when using a calculator. • reading sports news. • understand the economy. • Can you think of anything else?
