Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids October 22, 2013 An element is classified as one of these due to the properties it has
Metals(Left side and bottom of table) • Are shiny (have luster) • Are GOOD CONDUCTORS of energy (heat and electricity) • Are MALLABLE (able to be bent and shaped into flat sheets • Are DUCTILE (able to be pulled into wire) • Are SOLID at room temperature (except for Mercury-he’s a liquid) • Have FEWvalence electrons-it depends on the family
Nonmetals (right side of table) • Are not shiny (do not have luster) • Are POOR CONDUCTORS of energy (heat and electricity) • Are not MALLABLE (able to be bent and shaped into flat sheets); but BRITTLE (easily broken) • Are not DUCTILE (able to be pulled into wire) • Are SOLID, LIQUID, OR GAS at room temperature (NONMETAL does not mean it’s a GAS) • Have LOTS of valence electrons-it depends on the family
Metalloids(placed on the zig zag line) • Physical properties depend on specific element • Chemical properties depend on specific element • Number of valence electrons depends on specific element • Are SEMI-CONDUCTORS of energy (heat and electricity)
