John Steinbeck • John Steinback was born in Salinas, California. • He went to Stanford University, but never graduated. • He went to New York to try to be a free lance writer but failed. • He went back to California. • He wrote a few short stories there and then became popular and well known when he did Tortilla Flat, a series of humorous stories Montereypaisanos-(pahy-sah-noh-zah) • After Tortilla Flat he moved on to a more serious novel, often aggressive in social criticism.
Novel work • Dubois Battle was a more serious novel than his others. It deals with the strikes migratory fruit pickers on California plantations. • Of Mice Of Men, the story of the giant imbecile Lennieand a series of admirable short stories collected in the series The Long Valley. • In 1939 he created what people say his best work, The Grapes of Wrath, the story of Oklahoma tenant farmer, who can’t earn a living off the land, move to California where they became migratory workers.
The Grapes of Wrath • John Steinbeck wrote the novel through late May- late October, in Los Gatos, California. • It was considered his best work. It was published in April 14 1939. • John Steinbeck probably wrote The Grapes of Wrath to say that oppression would lead to Wrath but also workers should be redeemed through cooperation.
John Steinbeck: His story • John Steinbeck was born in February 27 1902 and dies in December 20 1968 at the age of 66. • He was John Ernst Steinbeck’s and Olive Hamiltons’ only son. • His father was a bookkeeper and an accountant. • He also served as the treasurer for Montery County, California. • Steinbeck got his love for writing from his mother who loved the arts. • His favorite book, which inspired him to write, was Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morted’Arthur, a collection of legends on King Arthur. • Steinbeck decided to be a writer in High School. • He also enjoyed sports and worked in many ranches over the summers.
FunFacts • John Steinbeck’s Tortilla Flat won the California Commonwealth Club’s Gold Medal award for best novel. • During WW1, Steinbeck worked as a war correspondent for a New York newspaper. • Many of Steinbeck’s novels were themes of social protest. • Most of Steinbeck’s novel were turned into films like The Grapes of Wrath. • His house is now a restaurant and a gift shop.
