  2. Red Maple • Found in all regions of NC. • It commonly grows under the more extreme soil-moisture conditions either very wet or quite dry.

  3. Sweetgum • Found in the piedmont region of NC • As is characteristic of most hardwood species, it grows best on the moist alluvial clay and loamy soils of river bottoms.

  4. Green ash • Found in the piedmont region of NC • It is common on land subject to flooding and can remain healthy when flooded for as long as 40 percent of the time during a growing season.

  5. Willow oak • Found in the piedmont region of NC • Willow oak grows on a variety of alluvial soils and is found on ridges and high flats of major streams.

  6. Pond pine • Found in the sandhills and inner coastal plain. • Pond pine is most frequently found on poorly drained lands, and can grow on land that is not continuously waterlogged.
