  1. Welcome to 2nd Grade!Let’s Rock n’ Roll! Ms. Robertson Room 512

  2. All About Me • My background • I was born and raised in Memphis, TN. I currently reside in the Bartlett/Arlington area. • I attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where I received a Bachelor’s degree in English, with a focus in Creative Writing. I also received my Master’s degree in Elementary Education from UT. • My experience • I interned in a Kindergarten classroom for 1 year and spent 6 weeks in a 4th grade classroom (in Roane County, TN). • This is my 5thyear teaching and my 4thyear at Atoka Elementary.

  3. My Family • Most of my family lives in Memphis. • I have a sister (27) who works in marketing, a mother (a Kindergarten teacher at Lausanne Collegiate School), and a father, who is a computer engineer at FedEx. • I have a dog named Bentley, who is 6.

  4. My Goals • To give your child the academic and social skills they need to progress to 3rd grade. • To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. • To help your child make new friends and discover new interests.

  5. Grades • Letter grades are given for the following 2nd grade subjects: • Reading • English • Math • Science and social studies are integrated and receive participation grades. (This will change in 3rd grade) • This year Spelling will not be a separate grade from other Language Arts subjects. It will be included with Reading.

  6. Classroom Community • Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. • Our class rules are: • Come in quietly. • Be ready to learn. • Raise your hand to talk • Do your best. • Be a friend.

  7. Homework • I will assign a homework packet each week. This also includes 20 minutes of reading which should be done at least 5 days a week. • Homework packets can be found in the homework pocket (back) of your child’s ROCKSTAR binder. • All homework packets go home on Monday and are due each Friday morning. • The blank sheet of notebook paper on the back of the packet is for ONE Spelling activity. Your child may choose from 5 activities that are listed on a page in your child’s binder.

  8. Accelerated Reader • Please read with your child (or have them read independently) everynight. Reading 15-20 minutes each night is also part of your child’s homework. • If you would like to write a ‘reminder’ to your child in his/her agenda, with the book title and author that they are to test on, you are welcome to.  • When your child has read a book 2-3times fluently he/she is ready to take an AR test. They should read books at their personal reading level so the tests will also be at their level. • I will let your child know what level books are appropriate for them. Based on your child’s progress with AR, he/she may be instructed to read their book more than 2-3 times. In most cases, chapter books only need to be read once.

  9. Tardiness • School starts at 7:50 A.M. • If your child isn’t in the classroom by this time, please check in at the school office before coming to class. • Four tardies = one absence • Checking out early from school counts as a tardy. • Front doors will lock at 7:50, please ‘buzz-in’ with your photo ID after this time. DO NOT drop children off at the front door.

  10. NEW BUZZER ENTRY SYSTEM • From the desk of Dr. Byrd : In an ongoing effort to keep our students and school safe, we have installed a buzz-in entry system in the front doors of the building.  Beginning August 11, 2014, please be prepared to buzz in, provide your name, and state your business into the camera lens before entering. Once school begins at 7:50 each morning, the front doors will be locked and entrance will only be allowed using the buzz-in system.

  11. Snack • We will have snack every day around 9:15-9:30. Please send a snack with your child each day if they wish to have one. • Snack cart will begin running each Friday morning. You may either send a snack on Fridays or send money for your child to purchase one from snack cart.

  12. How Can I Be Involved? • Classroom tasks – cut out lamination, sort/staple papers together, etc. • Help with morning car line • TRACK Day volunteers (once per quarter) • Fall Carnival volunteers • Book Fair volunteers • Field Trip chaperones • PTO • Help with class parties • Donations  • Parents who want to help by working directly with students (reading buddies, etc.) will need to meet with Dr. Byrd.

  13. Lunch • Our lunch time is 12:20-12:45. • Please send checks or cash to school to cover your child’s lunch (and breakfast, if applicable).  Charging is strongly discouraged.Lunch is $2.00. • It is easiest to send the money at the beginning of the week (or month).  There is a zipper pocket in their ROCKSTAR binder where you can put the money.  • Please put all money in an envelope or Ziploc bag that is labeled with their name and the purpose of the check/money.

  14. Lunch Visitors • You are encouraged to have lunch with your child after cafeteria procedures have been practiced for a couple of weeks (after 8/18). • If you come to have lunch with your child, please ‘buzz-in’ and sign in at the front office. You may then head on to the cafeteria where we will meet you.

  15. Headphones • Every child needs his/her own pair of headphones.  You can find inexpensive ones at the Dollar Tree, Big Lots, Family Dollar, and Fred's.  • We use these in 2 of our workstations in class, and they are required for computer class.  • These may need to be replaced at some point during the year.

  16. $ Money, Money, Money $ • Checks: Please write your child's name and my name in the "memo" section of your check.  Always make it out for the exact amount.  • If sending money for two different things, please remember to send two separate checks. • When sending cash, please send exact change as we are not allowed to make change.

  17. ROCKSTAR Binder • I want to introduce you to your ROCKSTAR binder. • ROCKSTAR is an acronym for: Really Organized Children Keeping Stuff Together, Always Ready! • Your child is required to take this binder home every afternoon and is also responsible for bringing it back to school in the mornings. • It has several sections to help all of us stay informed.

  18. Remind 101 • Please take out your cell phone if you have one on you  • This is a quick, easy way to receive important classroom updates via text. • This system will not allow you to respond back to me, however you may call or e-mail me at any time if you wish to respond. • Please text: @fbac to (423) 443-4169

  19. Donations • The following items are used in our classroom every week, and are always welcome : • Tissues • Dry erase markers • Colored copy paper • Clorox wipes • Paper towels • Treasure box treasures *Please send in a sock with your child to use as an eraser for his/her dry erase board.
