  2. Urban Ecology • Urban ecology is the subfield of ecology which deals with the interaction of plants, animals and humans with each other and with their environment in urban or urbanizing settings. • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_ecology

  3. Our Site • Our site is located in Brighton at Newton border. It is 38 acres and was developed around 1930. • The urban pond is a watering hole for swan, Canada geese, heron, and rabbits. A pleasant walk around two-thirds of the pond takes you through the small park and along Lake Shore Road.

Research Question • How does Ph and Dissolved Oxygen vary in areas with low and high vegetation and animals in Chandler’s Pond? • Hypothesis: Areas with more animals will have more pH and Dissolved Oxygen and areas with less animals will have less pH and Dissolved Oxygen. • Our Variables are the levels of pH and Dissolved Oxygen.

Data Collection • We collected our data by getting water from Chandler’s Pond and testing it different time with the same test to make sure we had the right result. • We collected our data on July 27, 2008 and July 28,2008 • We used bottles, buckets, nitrogen and Dissolved Oxygen kits . • We followed the instructions that were given with the kits. • Some recorder data, some ran test

  7. Data Analysis • We tested the two sites and tried to find a difference in The dissolved oxygen. We Looked at our data from the different sites and realized that there was only a slight difference in the water from each site. The temperature of the water was the same and the Ph of the water was very similar.

  9. Results • We saw that the area with low vegetation tested the same both time on two different days areas. • The results show that there is no difference in pH and D.O. in areas with low and high vegetation

  10. Conclusions • We claim that there is no difference in the areas with low and high vegetation and animals. The data we collected proved our claim. • We tested on two different days and found the same results pH 7.5 and D.O. 8.

  11. Questions for future Research • Would the data we gathered change in the next few years? Why? • Would more trees and animals in Chandler’s pond increase the D.O. in the water?

  12. What we learned • 7.5 for pH is a good level that means the water is not acidic. • There are little macros that live in the soil at the bottom of the pond. • There are certain species of macros at certain areas of the pond.
