Entry Task: November 9thFriday Provide the formula and name for the following: MgP and Lithium nitride TURN IN ENTRY TASK SHEET
Agenda: • Notes on Transitional elements • In-class practice on part of homework • Finish the rest of sheet for homework
Transitional Elements USE THE BACKSIDE OF BINARY T-METAL SHEET
H Li C Be Mg Na Si Fe Cu Zn K Mn Co Ge Ni Ca Sr Rb Ag Cd Ba Au Hg Pb Cs Cations When these atoms become ions they lose electrons thus becoming a positive charge. +1 +2 +3 +4 B Transitional Elements Al Sn Transitional elements can change charges. To know the charges we use Roman numerals. Iron (III) ion is Fe+3 Copper (I) ion is Cu+1 Lead (IV) ion is Pb+4
Cations Transitional elements can change charges. How do you know the charges? We use Roman numeral to denote the charge. +1 charge is ( I ) +4 charge is ( IV ) +3 charge is ( III ) +2 charge is ( II ) +5 charge is ( V ) Iron (III) ion Fe+3 Copper (I) ion Cu+1 Lead (IV) ion Pb+4 Tin (IV) ion Sn+4
Provide the symbol and charges for the following Calcium Ca +2 Potassium K +1 Iron II Fe +2 Gold II Au +2 Magnesium Mg +2 Aluminum Al +3 Pb+3 Tin IV Sn +4 Lead III
Some exceptions There are three transition elements which do not require a Roman Numeral because they have single definite charges. These are Zinc – Zn+2 Cadmium – Cd+2 Silver – Ag+1 You need to remember the charges for these.
Some exceptions Mercury’s has a twist Mercury I – Hg21+ Mercury II – Hg+2 You need to remember this as well
Let’s practice! 1. ZnCl2 31. Barium hydride 2. MgF2 32. Nickel (II) iodide 3. FeO 33. Iron (II) sulfide 4. CoCl2 34. Chromium (III) chloride 5. VCl5 Chlorine is -1 (2 ) = -2. Cation= +2Zinc chloride Ba = +2 H= -1 = BaH2 Fluorine is -1 (2 ) = -2. Cation= +2 Magnesium fluoride Ni = +2 I= -1 = NiI2 Oxygen is -2 (1 ) = -2. Cation= +2Iron II oxide Fe = +2 S= -2 = FeS Chlorine is -1 (2 ) = -2. Cation= +2Cobalt II chloride Cr = +3 Cl= -1= CrCl3 Chlorine is -1 (5 ) = -5. Cation= +5Vanadium V chloride
