  2. Why Talk About Reproductive Health and Contraception? • World wide, sex occurs about 140 million times per day • Resulting in: • 910 000 pregnancies (450 000 of these unplanned) • 356 000 sexually transmitted infections

  3. Adolescent Sexual Behaviour • Historically • Puberty occurred in mid adolescence • Less schooling • Started work earlier (e.g. farming, apprenticeship) • Marriage occurred in late adolescent years Today • Puberty occurs in early adolescence • Completes high school and post secondary education • Starts work after schooling is completed • Chooses to marry in mid to late twenties

Teen Pregnancy • Teenage birth rates have decreased since 1991. • Teen mothers and their babies face increased risk to their health. • Teen mothers and their babies face decreased opportunities to build a future. • Teen mothers are more likely to have premature babies. • Teen mothers are more likely to have low birth weight babies.

Reasons That Adolescents Do Not UseContraception • Sexual activity was unexpected and unplanned. • Lack of information and knowledge about contraception at the time of first intercourse. • Fear of medical procedures. • Fear of judgmental attitudes and resistance from health-care providers. • Fear/lack of confidentiality.

Sexual Decision Making • Do I know what I want from the relationship? • Am I following my personal beliefs and values? • Do we both want the same thing? • How will I feel about this tomorrow? • Am I letting alcohol, drug use, self esteem, or peer pressure affect my decision? • Do I know how to use condoms or other protection? • Is this consensual sex? • Protect yourself - to lower your risk of sexually transmitted diseases use a new condom every time you have sex.
