SIDALC-SUIRNAME Sidalc-Suriname started on April 20, 2002. 6 Institutions participated in the project: • Anne van Dijk Rice Research Centre Nickerie (ADRON) • Center for Agricultural Research in Suriname (CELOS) • Faculty of Technology of the University of Suriname (FTeW) • Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) • Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries (LVV) • Library of the University of Suriname (L/ADEK)

RESPONSIBILITIES OF INSTITUTIONS IICA: Facilitate the national administrative process Facilitate relations between the national agricultural sector and Sidalc Detect information needs of users and national institutions Recommendations for improvement of services and products GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES Maintenance and care of the equipment use in the system; Keeping statistics of the system’s use; and other activities necessary to optimize Suriname’s participation in the network. ADEK/L: Coordination of the System at national level Make available all national bibliographic data electronic Technical assistance and training for participating institutions. FTeW: Assistance with indexing and abstracting of the documents Technical assistance with the hardware ADRON/CELOS /MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE: Make agricultural information and agricultural research results available

SIDALC NOW IN SURINAME • Ministry of Agriculture and the Library of the University are still processing information to Sidalc • All institutions have a library • Except for the Library of the University, none of the institutions have an on-line library yet • Lack of awareness of SIDALC in Suriname

  5. SURINAME CONTRIBUTION TO SIDALC

CONSTRAINTS • Lack of affinity with agriculture • Not all agricultural information in the country is available • Thesis of foreign students not available? • Lack of an national agricultural information system • Unfinished project due to financial problems • Language barriers • Poor or inadequate ICT infrastructure

  7. FUTURE • More collaboration among Sidalc members • Promotion of existed Information Services • National Repository • Awareness campaign • Link Sidalc activities with LanTeeal
