Jeff Tech Preparing for your future today
Who Should Go? • Students who want to enter the work force immediately after graduation • Students who can receive their desired post-education now and do it for free • Students interested in a LIFE LONG field of study offered at Jeff Tech • Students who do well with hands-on learning • Students who will plan to pursue post-education options, but need a stronger background beforehand
Who Should NOT Go? • Students interested in a 4-year college degree that is unrelated to studies offered at Jeff Tech • Students with numerous behavior referrals • Students with numerous grade deficiencies • Students with numerous absences • Students going because his/her best friend is going • Students completely unsure of his/her future plans
How Do I Go? • If you have additional questions or concerns, see Mrs. Bowser to schedule an individual session. There are also shadowing opportunities and Open Houses to help you make a decision. • Fill out an application and all related items and turn it in to Mrs. Bowser before February 2014.
Application Process • In addition to the application, each applicant must submit a letter of interest. • The letter of interest must be at least one paragraph in length. • The letter should have proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. (Hint- show it to your English teacher first!) • The letter should outline why you want to go, what shop you are applying for, and tell why Jeff Tech is a good decision for you, personally. • Applications will not be considered/processed without this letter.
Sample Letter • My name is SpongebobSquarepants. I am applying for entry into the Culinary Arts shop. I feel that Jeff Tech would be a good option for me because I enjoy hands-on learning. I also love to cook and someday, I hope to be a fry cook for the KrustyKrab. Jeff Tech will help me meet this goal by giving me the training I will use for the rest of my life.
Screening Process • Once your application and letter of intent have been turned in, your application will go through a screening process. • It costs the district around $10,000 per student to send a child to Jeff Tech. We want to make sure that we send kids who will be a GOOD investment. We also want to make sure that Jeff Tech is the right choice for you & your future. • Even if you are processed and accepted, you can be returned to Brookville at any time.
Scholastic Achievement- 25 points • The committee will average your last report card and current grades for core classes. • 93-100… 5 points each • 85-92….. 4 points each • 77-84…. 3 points each • 70-76…. 1 point each • 0-69…. 0 points each • Sorry PE and elective credits don’t count!
Attendance- 23 Points • Attendance is important for Jeff Tech participation! Students must write reports when they miss their shop, which can eventually fail a student. We want to send students who are going to be consistently present and on time. • 0 absences…. 23 points • 1-6 absences… 15 points • 7-13 absences… 10 points • 14-20 absences… 5 points • 21+ absences… 0 points • Illegal absences… -1 for point for each
School Discipline- 20 Points • No incidents… 20 points • 1 Minor incident… 18 points • 2-4 Minor incidents… 16 points • 5 Minor/1 Suspension… 10 points • 2 Suspensions… 4 points • 3+ Suspensions… 0 points
Recommendation- 10 Points • Excellent… 10 points • Above Average… 7 points • Average… 5 points • Poor… 0 points
Follow-up Procedure • After your application has been processed, you will receive one of 3 letters : • 1- Verification that your application was processed to Jeff Tech • 2- Notification that you are on a probationary period (target areas will be included) • 3- Denial for acceptance. (At which case, you can re-apply the following year at the halfway mark but must begin the screening process again)
Acceptance • You may not hear from Jeff Tech until the end of the school year or even up to the last day of the summer • If you do not get your first shop of choice- stick with it! You are allowed to transfer one time and those students get priority choices • Your application CAN AND WILL be withdrawn if you regress in any of the screening areas at any time through the your entire JT career. Jeff Tech students have been returned to Brookville High School for deficiency reports.
Needed to Withdraw from Jeff Tech: • After initial application… letter of withdrawal signed by student AND parent to Mrs. Bowser • After being ACCEPTED… letter of withdrawal signed by student AND parent BEFORE AUGUST 1st . (After that- you’re there until the 2nd semester. No exceptions.) • After ATTENDING… letter of withdrawal to JT counselor. Can’t return until 2nd semester.
What If I Wait or Am Denied? • The option to go to Jeff Tech is available for any student in grades 9 &10. JT will not take students after their 10th grade year. • Applications should be submitted for the start of the 2nd semester by the end of December. Students are then locked in to JT for the rest of that school year and can only return at the start of the next school year. • Any denied student can re-apply the next school year but will once again go through the selection criteria.
Participation in Home Activities • Brookville Jeff Tech students are still eligible to participate in all home school activities, sports, etc. • Students must provide their own transportation for these events. • Students are responsible for alerting Jeff Tech to their plans so that the appropriate shop timing can be implemented in the student’s school day.
Half Day • Sometimes students ask if they can do half day at Brookville and half day at Jeff Tech (i.e.: academic classes at BAHS, shop at JT) • We do not accommodate half day. Students must make a full day commitment to either Jeff Tech or Brookville High School.
Jeff Tech Exploration • If you are still unsure… • Go with your parents to the Open House on Thursday, November 14 from 4:30-6:30 and talk to the experts in person. • Schedule a day in January to shadow two shop classes. Talk to the other kids and instructors in each about the pros and cons. • Wait a year to apply. You can apply up until your 10th grade year. • If you and your family are unable to attend the JT Open House, the school is often willing to set up an appointment that works for your schedule.
