Finding story ideas • Follow the news in your area of interest from wire services, international newspapers, and local and regional news sources.Find English language newspapers in the country or region you are interested in. • Sign up for e mail alerts, rss feeds, twitter alerts
Things to work on for your next stories • Sources • Your story should not just be based on putting together news reports that you have found on the web • After you find a story you want to work on, try and see what the original source of the story is: press release, speech, appearance on TV?
Get in touch with experts or people on the ground, and get more information • If you read something on a website, see who the author is. Is the author well known, reliable? Can you trust this source?
2. Facts • Journalism is about getting your facts right. It is your job to make sure that the facts that are in your story are correct • Go to original sources as much as possible • Otherwise try find more than one source for the same fact, until you are sure it is correct • Link to the source of your information, if it is not an interview you have done yourself.
3. Putting things in context • Do background reading on the subject you are writing about so you can put things in context, and understand whether a story is important or not
4. Is your story interesting? • If you think it is interesting, why is it interesting? • Bring it out in your story
Above all: • Write your own story, in your own words. Cutting and pasting and copying without attribution is plagiarism, and you will face penalties.
