  2. Who Was Apollinaris? • Known as Apollinaris of Ravenna • Syrian saint • a bishop who, according to tradition, while spreading among the nations the unsearchable riches of Christ, led his flock as a good shepherd and honoured the Church of Classis near Ravenna by a glorious martyrdom

  3. Location • Born in Antioch, modern day Turkey • First Bishop of Ravenna, faced constant persecution • Exiled by Emperor Vaspasian (Nero) during his persecutions • Martyred by being stabbed

  4. Bishop • Made Bishop of Ravenna by Saint Peter himself • His preaching won many converts to the Faith, while at the same time bringing fury of the idolaters • Acts of the martyrdom of Saint Apollinaris have scarcely any historical value

  5. Worship • Miracle Worker • Considered especially effective against gout and epilepsy • Relics are at • Basilica of Sant'ApollinareNuovo • 6th century Benedictine Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe • In the Tridentine Calendar his feast day is July 23, his day of martyrdom.
