  1. Push for Usability of Data Tools Wizards (Short Talk) Brian Fitzpatrick Sybase, Inc. Sr. Software Engineer Eclipse Data Tools Platform Connectivity Project Lead

  2. Welcome! • Three main points for this talk about Usability for DTP in the Ganymede release: • Why are we focusing on usability? • What are the changes being considered? • How can you get involved in the effort?

  3. Why focus on usability for DTP in Ganymede? • Over the last two releases, we’ve had a few complaints from users and as we’ve gained more adopters, we decided it was time to start addressing some of the issues. Such issues include: • Driver Management requires first time users to know a great deal and go through a large number of steps for a relatively simple concept • Default driver definitions should be created behind the scenes wherever possible to eliminate this step entirely for most users • Creating connection profiles requires that drivers be defined ahead of time or they must side-track and go through driver management before getting back to profile creation • And when gathering profile data, we should make the UI as familiar as possible for users to enter simple bits (host, port, db name, and so on) and create the URL automatically

  4. What are the changes being considered? • For the Ganymede release, we’re focusing mainly in two areas: • Changes that can be made to the framework components to benefit all adopters & users • And changes that can be made that may be wrapped in an alternate path for adopters to choose • Items in the first category include: common dialogs for driver selection and editing • Items in the second category include: separate, simpler, more unified profile wizards

  5. How can you get involved in the effort? • Take a look at some of the DataTools Usability docs on the Wiki: • http://wiki.eclipse.org/Connectivity:Usability:HighLevelPlan • http://wiki.eclipse.org/Connectivity:Usability:High_Level_Design • Keep an eye out for a DataTools BOF at the conference • Main DataTools site at http://www.eclipse.org/datatools • Newsgroup - news://news.eclipse.org/eclipse.dtp • Mailing list – http://dev.eclipse.org/mailman/listinfo/dtp-dev • Wiki - http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/Data_Tools_Platform_Project • Bugzilla for bug or enhancement requests • Feel free to ask questions and make suggestions!

  6. That’s it! • Thanks for your time! • Enjoy the conference!
