  1. Los números Mathematical problem solving Existence/Non-existence Quantity How much? How many?

  2. Vamos a resolver problemas • más / y • menos • (multiplicado) por • divididopor • es cero/esuno son dos (any number greater than 1) esigual a (any number)

  3. Resuelvan los problemas en español. • 2 2 = 4 • 20 10 = 10 • 11 3 = 33 • Dos más/y dos son cuatro. • Dos más/y dos esigual a cuatro. • Veintemenosdiez son diez. • Veintemenosdiezesigual a diez. • Once (multiplicado) portres son treinta y tres. • Once (multiplicado) portresesigual a treinta y tres.

  4. 100 2 = 50 • 40 40 = 0 • 0 1 = 1 • Ciendivididopor dos son cincuenta. • Ciendivididopor dos esigual a cincuenta. • Cuarentamenoscuarentaes cero. • Cuarentamenoscuarentaesigual a cero. • Cero más /y unoesuno. • Cero más/y unoesigual a uno.

  5. De antemano (Beforehand) • Before we can start to talk about the quantity of people and things, we must learn the expressions: • Hay • No hay

  6. Existence • In a statement, the word “Hay” means: • There is • There are • In a question the word “¿Hay?” means: • Is there? • Are there?

  7. Non-existence • In a statement, the phrase “No hay” means: • There is not/There isn’t • There are not/ There aren’t • In a question the phrase “¿No hay?” means: • Isn’t there? /Is there not? • Aren’t there? / Are there not?

  8. ¡OJO! • In questions and in negative statements with “hay” we don’t use un/una before the noun unless we mean the number “one.” • ¿Hayunacomputadora en la clase? Is there one computer in the class? • Sí, hay unacomputadora. Yes, there is one computer. • No, hay dos computadoras. No, there are two computers. • ¿ Hay computadora en la clase? Is there a computer in the class? • Sí, hay computadora en la clase. • No, no hay computadora en la clase.

  9. Questioning and answering about existence • ¿Hay tarea? Is there homework? • Sí, hay tarea. Yes, there is homework. • No, no hay tarea. No, there is no homework. • ¿ Hay chicos en la fotografía? Are there boys in the photograph? • Sí, hay chicos en la fotografía. Yes, there are boys in the photograph. • No, no hay chicos en la fotografía. No, there are no boys in the photograph.

  10. Ask and answer in pairs…(en la escuela/en la clase) • Are there students in the school? (Sí) • Is there a computer in the class? (No) ¿ Hay estudiantes en la escuela? -Sí, hay estudiantes en la escuela. ¿ Hay computadora en la clase? No, no hay computadora en la clase.

  11. To ask the quantity¿Cuánto?/ ¿ Cuánta? = How much?¿ Cuántos?/ ¿ Cuántas? = How many? The interrogative word to inquire about the quantity of people and things works as an adjective. It must agree with the noun being modified in gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural).

  12. How much? ¿Cuánto + masculine singular noun + hay? ¿Cuántodinero hay? How much money is there? • ¿Cuánta + feminine singular noun + hay? ¿Cuántatarea hay? How much homework is there?

  13. How many? • ¿Cuántos + masculine plural noun + hay? ¿ Cuántoschicos hay? How many boys are there? • ¿ Cuántas + feminine plural noun + hay? ¿ Cuántascomputadoras hay? How many computers are there?

  14. Using numbers to answer “How many?” • When someone asks the question “How many?” it calls for the use of numbers. • When numbers are used as adjectives, they come before the noun.

  15. Numbers from 0-100 do not change to agree with the noun, except for those ending in the number “one.” The word “uno” is not used as an adjective. • The following numbers contain the number “one” and must agree in gender with the noun being modified. (1, 21, 31, 41, 51, 61, 71, 81, 91) • If the noun being counted is masculine, uno becomes un. If the noun being counted is feminine, unobecomes una.

  16. Porejemplo…For example… • 1 boy un chico • 1 girl unachica • 21 boys veinte y un chicos(veintiún) • 21 girls veinte y unachicas(veintiuna) • 31 notebooks treinta y un cuadernos • 31 things treinta y unacosas The numbers 41, 51, 61, 71, 81, 91 would all follow the same rule.
