PHA Technology Pilot Professional Development Tuesday, January 20, 2009
Your Hosts! • Mary Kelleher, Middle School • Mark Whipple, Upper School • Pam Moline, Lower School
Who Are You? Introductions • Name • Grade Level • Subject(s) taught • Technology skill level: • Newbie • Getting up to speed • Power user • Guru • Tell me again why I need to be here?
Why Projectors? Why Now? • Quick overview of goals of the pilot and expectations for the participants, including vision for larger rollout • You are the guinea pigs!
The New Stuff • So, you have some new equipment in your classroom! • Desktop Computer w/LCD monitor • Ceiling-hung LCD Projector • Speakers
New Stuff, part 2 • Second video connection • Cool remote mice • Timer program • Other stuff?
Possible Policy Concerns • Student use, especially US at lunch • Other stuff?
What do I do with this new equipment? Some obvious choices: • Powerpoint • Discovery Education Streaming (LS and MS) • Youtube • DVDs
Powerpoint Pitfalls • Some people are tempted to put all of their lesson material into Powerpoint presentations • There is some value in having a set of presentations that you can reuse • It’s possible to use Powerpoint too much! • It’s also quite easy to make presentations that are lots of fun for the presenter, but annoying to the audience!
Some Less Obvious Choices • Use MS Paint (or other drawing program) to draw on the screen • Edit an essay/paragraph/sentence on screen (use a BIG font) • Virtual activities: on line dissection • Powerpoint Jeopardy • Educational-based animation (of a natural process in Science or thought process in Math or English) • Group brainstorming with Inspiration/Kidspiration
Technology in the Classroom • Try to use technology to do things that you can’t do any other way • How can technology enhance teaching and learning in your classroom? • What are others at your grade level or in your discipline doing with technology? • Think about attending a conference like MassCUE, or a summer workshop on classroom technology
How can I add to what I’ve got? • Some limited funds are available for additional software/hardware • We have a request form you’ll need to complete and submit before April 17th 2009 • A committee will review the requests and coordinate with Chris and Alex as appropriate
Teacher Success & Challenges Please share some of the success you’ve had so far with the new equipment, and any challenges you may have encountered If you have a suggestion for a cool way to use this equipment for teaching and learning, please email it to the group (Tech Pilots)
Follow-up • We’ve posted some resources for you at the PHA Educational Technology Wiki http://phaedtech.pbwiki.com • We’ll continue to update this resource with useful info – let us know if you’d like to contribute too!
