What is Anxiety? • A general term for several disorders that cause nervousness, fear, or worrying • Effects behavior and can cause unpleasant physical symptoms • Mild anxiety- vague and unsettling • Severe anxiety- extremely debilitating and can have a serious impact on a persons daily life
Symptoms • Emotional • Restlessness • Feelings of apprehension • Tense • Anticipating the worst • Irritability • Physical • Sweating • Heart Pounding • Dizziness • Headache • Twitches • Trouble breathing
Causes of Anxiety • Genetics • Family History • Biochemistry • Common external factors • Stress at school • Stress at work • Relationship stress • Financial stress • Stress from death of a loved one • Side effect of medication • Use of illicit drug
Types of Anxiety Disorders • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (Most Common) • Panic Disorder • Phobic Disorders • Obsessive-compulsive Disorder • Post-traumatic stress Disorder • Separation Anxiety Disorder
Treatment for Anxiety • Medication • Antidepressants • SSRI’s • Anti-Anxiety Drugs • Beta Blockers • Psychotherapy • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy- change thinking patterns that support fears, change reaction to anxiety-provoking situations
Effects of Physical Activity on Anxiety • Provide benefits that no medication or drug can manage • Brisk walk 30 minutes 5 days a week significant health benefits • Exercise can boost morale, enhance self esteem, self control, and self confidence • Exercise can control the many stressors that lead to anxiety
Konya Selcuk University Study • The State Trait Anxiety Inventory was given to 311 students. • First 60 students with high levels of anxiety split into two groups. • The experimental group participated in 30 minutes of various physical activities for 6 weeks. • The control group did not participate in any physical activity. • Pre, Mid, and Post results were estimated the STAI. • After the 6 weeks the test showed a significant decrease in anxiety for the experimental group while the control group remained the same.
