  2. “The neighborhood protected me and the church guided me.” • Born: August 12, 1937 in Martinsburg, West Virginia • Given name: Walter Milton Myers (given away at birth, adopted by Herbert and Florence Dean of Harlem) • Dropped out of high school and enlisted at 17 • Continued writing because a teacher told him to never stop. “It’s what you do.” • Worked at a rehab center, Dept. of Labor, Post Office, and transformer company before writing full time (won an award for the book Where Does a Day Go? In 1969) • Received a degree in English from Empire State College in 1984 • Currently lives in Jersey City, NJ • As of 2012, Myers is the Library of Congress’s National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature

Author’s style • As an African American and life long resident of Harlem, Myers wants to lend a voice to the voiceless and give children from urban neighborhoods relatable works to read. • The Urban Experience • Began to write poetry and short stories due to a speech impediment as a child: Celebrates diversity and being different in his works • Genres: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Picture Book, Series, Historical Fiction, Short Story, Screenplay, Reimagining of classic stories • Writes for both children and young adults • Common topics in his body of work: inner city/urban life, gang violence, imprisonment, effects of war, the justice system "The special place of the young adult novel should be in its ability to address the needs of the reader to understand his or her relationships with the world, with each other, and with adults…Young people need ideals which identify them, and their lives, as central . . . guideposts which tell them what they can be, should be, and indeed are."
