Marco polo • In the middle ages, an Italian merchant named Marco Polo spent a lot of years in China. • He wrote a very famous book about his experiences. • His book helped Europeans to learn about Asian people and goods. • Marco Polo was born in about 1254, probably in Venice. • His father and uncle were merchants who traveled to many places.

  3. Asia • In about 1271, they took young Marco to Asia. • The Polos sailed over the Mediterranean Sea to what today is Israel. • Then they traveled over land to Turkey, Persia (Which is Iran) and Afghanistan.

  4. CONTINUED…. ASIA • In Central Asia, they followed a route called the Silk Road. • The Silk Road was a trade route for fine silk cloth from Asia. • In 1275, the Polos reached Shangdu, Mongolia. • This was the summer home of Kublai Khan, which is the Mongol emperor of China.

  5. Working for the emperor • For around 17 years, Marco Polo worked for the emperor. • His errands took him all the way to Southeastern China and possibly Burma. • For their return trip to Venice, the Polo’s took 14 of Kublai Khan’s ships.

  6. Going back to venice • They sailed from eastern China all the way to the coast of Persia. • Then they went overland all the way through Persia and Turkey. • They finally reached Venice in 1295. • Everyone was surprised to see them alive after so many years.
