What is Supercomputing? • A computing system typically consisting of multiple processors working together with a lot of memory per processor, a lot of disk storage across the entire system that is capable of performing a large number of calculations in a short period of time on a large amount of data to achieve a single task. • Typical classes of problems include: • Problems of Scale • Simulation and Modeling • Difficult or “Hard” Problems – Non-Deterministic (NP) • Adaptive Systems; Artificial and Natural

The “Big Idea” – RMSC - State of Montana Vision To establish Montana as a recognized leader in the execution of a next-generation high performance computing business model as a fundamental component of Montana’s economic engine. • This vision will be realized by: • Crossing a critical cyberinfrastructure threshold • Becoming first in the nation for a “demand” based HPC business model leveraging economies of scale • Achieving “on-demand” computing capabilities • Focusing upon the investment in human capital as the critical component of the computing vision.
