OBJECTIVES: • 1. Find out about the Geography of the Americas. • 2. Learn about the Incan Empire in South America.
Geography of the Americas • North America very cold in the far north. • Middle America hot and tropical. • South America the mountain areas are cold. Areas around the equator are hot. They are much cooler in far south.
The Amazon • The Amazon River is the world's second longest river. Only the Nile, in Africa, is longer. • The Amazon River is located in South America.
The Mississippi • The Mississippi River is the largest of North America.
KEY TERMS • Incas: n. people of a powerful south American empire. • *Andes: n. a mountain chain of western south America. • Cuzco: n. the capital city of the Incan Empire. • Census: n. an official count of people.
Incas ruled a huge Empire in South America. • Incas settled in a small village in the rugged, steep Andes. • The village, Cuzco, became the Incas’ capital. • Incas took control of nearby lands. • They conquered other peoples.
Incan ruler was called Sapa Inca, or “The Emperor”. The people believed that he was related to the Sun-god. • Sapa Inca owned all the lands. He relied on officials to help him run his empire. • Officials used census to keep track of people. It helped to make sure that everyone paid taxes. • Farmersgave parts of their crops. In return the empire took care of the poor, the sick, and the elderly.
Incas spoke Quechua (KECH wuh). • They had no written language. • They kept records on quipu*.
quipu • (KEE poo) n. knotted strings used to record information.
Sapa Inca used relay runners to get information about his huge empire.
Incas were amazing builders. • They did not use mortar or cement so that the stones could move and resettle during earthquakes.
Francisco Pizarro, a Spanish conquistador/ conqueror, wanted to conquer its people. • Pizarro captured the emperor and killed its men. • The Spanish had better weapons. They carried diseases that the Incas had never been exposed to. These diseases killed many of the Incas. • The Spanish soon gained control of the Incan empire.
