Specialists/Speakers English Language Fellows (ELFs) • Currently in Manaus, Campinas, Londrina • In 2009: in Manaus, Belém, Belo Horizonte, São Paulo Academic specialists – up to two weeks, with cost-sharing. Multiple cities preferred. Regular speaker program – for specific seminars or programs

  3. Fulbright commission • Scholar programs • Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTAs) • English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) www.fulbright.org.br

  4. Book Donations • Ad-hoc donation of books by American authors for university and school libraries • Portuguese or English (preferably English) • Small grants to purchase books Often using end-of-year funds

  5. Texas InternationalEducation Consortium (TIEC) Scholarships for EFL teachers to participate in a two-week study program in Austin, Texas • Objective of the study program • strengthen English teaching skills • present new ideas regarding pedagogy and methodologies using U.S.-content teaching materials • foster a better understanding of the U.S. • to establish ongoing connections between English teachers in the region and the U.S.

  6. Colloquia on American Studies • Intensive eight-day seminar for 20 teachers • Themes vary each year – inter/multidisciplinary • Two this year (2008): one for teachers of literature/culture and English language, and another for teachers in the social sciences • Instructors: two American professors – one necessarily a historian • Last year, participants were from Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Brazil

  7. Shaping the WayWe Teach English • Teacher training program – 14 modules • Currently being used in public school teacher training programs at some BNCs (Brasilia, Campinas)

  8. Other program (new) • English Access Microscholarship program • Non-elite 14-16 year old students • Two years (minimum of 200 hours) of English, cultural exposure, community service, and computer skills • This year, in Recife, Salvador, São Paulo, and Porto Alegre
