  2. South African Art Like the frog ornament above, wire and bead pieces and collectibles are sold on almost every street corner in South Africa. Things like mini bicycles and globes are popular. Beading is very popular in South Africa. It was once the sign of tribal royalty. Beads are used for jewelry, decorating items such as matchboxes, and Ndebele dolls. Education in South Africa And about the students • By law, no child can be excluded from a state school if his or her parents can't afford to pay the fees. • 86.4% of the population is literate. • South Africa has more than a million students enrolled in the country's 24 state-funded institutions: • 11 universities • 5 universities of technology and • 6 comprehensive institutions. • In the 1990s, only about 40% of the population was admitted into schools. • In 2005 the rate was 86.3%, much higher than before.   21. The Many Languages The people of South Africa speak many languages. The official languages of South Africa are Afrikaans, English, Ndebele, Northern Sotho, Southern Sotho, Swati, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu.

  22. Imports and Exports Exports: Gold, diamonds and platinum are three major exports of South Africa. Other exports are coal and copper. Imports: Because South Africa does not have all the resources they need the import food stuffs, machinery, petrolium products and chemicals.

  23. Currency The currency of South Africa is called Rand. To the left is a picture of some bills and coins of the South African currency.

  24. The Economy The economy of Africa is mostly based off of services and working in agriculture. 45% of the people work in services and 30% work in agriculture.

  25. The Government South Africa has a constitutional democracy, seperated into three sections. Each of these sections has its own legislative power and authority.
