  14. Who is an Apprentice? A Person who: • is studying a skilled trade • receives on the job training with a journeyperson • works towards a “license” • experiences 90% hands • earns money while learning • works in the trade for 2-4 years

  16. This is not true of most of the trades any more! • Today’s plumbers must be: • Articulate • Friendly • Skilled at what they do • Good at math & measurement • Mature

  17. Trades require focus and attention. Without these, we can have some serious accidents.

  18. I wash my hands with dove…it’s ¼ moisturizing… Some trades still involve a little bit of getting your hands dirty, this is true.

  23. Your New Co-op Advantage You can now count up to 2 cooperative education credits towards the 18 compulsory credits needed for a high school diploma.

Co-op grants you compulsory Credits: • 4-credit: • 1 credit is a GLN credit and it counts towards a Group 1 compulsory • 3 credits are Co-op credits and 2 of them count towards a Group 2 and 3 compulsory 2-credit: • 1 credit is a Co-op credit and it counts towards a Group 1 compulsory • 1 credit is a Co-op credit and it may count for either a Group 2 or 3 compulsory

Co-op credits can count as one of these compulsory credits: Group 1: 1 additional credit in English, or a third language, or social sciences and the humanities, or Canadian and world studies, or guidance and career education, or cooperative education* Group 2: 1 additional credit in health and physical education, or the arts, or business studies, or cooperative education* Group 3: 1 additional credit in science, or technological education, or cooperative education*

To be eligible for Co-op or OYAP you MUST… • Be at least 16 years old • Successfully complete 16 credits prior to the start of Co-op • Successfully complete the application interview and the workplace interview • Have good attendance and punctuality records • Have a professional attitude and judgment & behaviour

Cooperative Education FactsWhat you need to know… • Complete the Coop Application Form • Successfully complete a Pre-course interview • Fulfill 3 weeks of Pre-placement instruction • Fulfill the expectations in your personalized placement learning plan (PPLP) including the required hours of work every day • Complete all the required assessment and evaluation criteria including a career showcase, logs and journals, and a final culminating performance task • Attend all of the regular in-school integration sessions every second Monday for the entire semester

Application Process • Get a Co-op application form from Co op or Guidance office. • Select either 2 or 4 credit co-op • Obtain 2 teacher references • Submit the form with your course selection/ registration form to guidance • Be successful in your co-op interview in March (Sept. start) or Nov. (Feb. start)

What Co-op will look like on your timetable • 4-credit: • Period 1 Coop • Period 2 Coop • Period 3 Coop • Period 4 Coop • 3 weeks in school pre-placement • Integration class every 2nd • Monday for the semester • 7.5 hour work day 2-credit: Period 1 Scheduled Class Period 2 Scheduled Class Period 3 Coop Period 4 Coop • 3 weeks in school pre-placement • Integration class every 2nd Monday for the semester • 3.5 hour work day
