  2. What is dual credit? & • You earn high school and college credit for the same course! • Courses taught by Collin College instructors • Academic course offerings • Options to transfer to four year college/university or earn degree or certificate at Collin College

Benefits of Dual Credit • Get a Jump Start on your College Career! • Simultaneously earn high school and college credit in one class. • Experience a college environment and the rigor of a college course. • College credit transfers to most colleges or universities. • Students can potentially earn up to a year of college credit before graduating high school. • Save time and money.

Dual Credit Eligibility • Available with permission from your high school each semester for every course • Students complete the entire admissions process plus a permission form for registration at Collin College. • Must be college ready as defined by Texas Success Initiative testing standards (more details to follow) • Students must earn a C or better in each course to maintain participation in the program

Things to consider… • HS and Collin calendar may be different • You follow the Collin calendar • Collin College may hold classes at the high school if the high school building is open, even when high schools are not in session (ex: teacher work day). • If the high school site is not available, professors may make arrangements for online assignment or hold class at Collin campus • Weather closings--if the location where your class is held closes, you do not have class

Things to consider… • Attendance and Time Management is very important! • Attendance policies vary by professor • Find the right balance between your course load and extracurricular activities • Get to know the course syllabus • Keep a planner • For every hour that you are in class, plan to spend at least 2-3 hours outside of class studying and preparing for next class

Things to consider… • FERPA and Personal Responsibility • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act • Federal law that ensures privacy of student educational records (begins when student starts college regardless of age) • Collin cannot share grades, course schedules, test scores, etc. with parents • Students’ opportunity to gain new responsibilities and act on his/her own behalf

Things to consider… • Collin College deadlines for Drop/Withdraw • Listed in Collin College registration guide • Drop is before the term’s census date and will not appear on college transcript • Withdraw is after term’s census date and will appear as “W” on college transcript • Must complete paperwork onCollin campus • Impact on graduation • Discuss with your HS counselor

  14. 1. Application for Admission WHEN do I apply? • You may apply online now for fall 2013! • Must be completebefore anything elsecan occur at Collin. • HOW? • Complete online with theTexas Common Application at ApplyTexas.org

Questions on ApplyTexas.org • Create an account/profile and then an application. • Collin is a two year school. • You may select any available choice for major. • Under Admissions Basis, you willselect Dual Credit. • Residency/tuition is decided based on your answers on the application. -Questions? High School Transcript • Collin needs the most recent high school transcript for every student. • It is used to meet testing requirements and set prerequisites. • It can help prove residency and defines your status. • May have vaccination information. • Your HS will provide to us-make sure they know you want to participate.

  17. 3. Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination • State Law (SB 1107) requires all students under the age of 30 entering a higher education institution to show proof of having the vaccine prior to the start of the term. • This is an admissions requirement for Collin College and should be completed before registration. • May sign Request for Exception if taking courses on HS campus only.

  18. 4. Texas Success Initiative (TSI) • The TSI is designed to measure competency in reading, writing, and mathematics. Students need a status in all subject areas. • It is used for placement purposes. • Students must place at college level in reading and writing to take any course. • Students wanting to take a math course or courses with math placement requirements, must take a Collin College math assessment regardless of exemptions.

  19. TSI Exemptions All students not eligible for an exemption must take an approved placement test prior to enrolling in any Texas public college or university.

  20. TSI What will I need to do? • Get a testing referral from Admissions and Records Office or Advising • Pay at the cashier, cost is $29. • Schedule an appointment to test with any campus Testing Center. • See an academic advisor to review your results.

  21. What if my TSI scores are low? • The purpose of this assessment is to find out what level you should start your coursework. • If you do not place at “college level,” that means you need to focus on your high school work at this time. - This is NOT uncommon.

  22. Checklist Review Admissions and Testing Complete! • 1. Submitted an Application • 2. Submitted official HS Transcript • 3. Submitted Meningitis Vaccinationor Request for Exception • 4. Met the TSI requirements Now you are ready forregistration (step #5)!

  23. 5. Register for Courses • Dual Credit students must register in person with a photo ID at designated date on HS campus or with an Academic Advisor on Collin College campus. • You will need your completed permission form with the required signatures. • Pay attention to deadlines for add/drop.

Fall 2013 Important Dates • You have a priority registration Friday June 21st 1-3 pm at Rockwall Admin Building Room 622 • Regular registration on Collin College campuses is June 24th-July 30th • Registration must be complete by Tuesday, July30th at 8 p.m. • Fall 2013 semester is August 26th -December 15th

What if my student cannot attend registration? • Parents may register for their student with a letter of release and a photo ID. • The letter is only good for one day. • Needs to include the student’s name, your name, the date, what you are going to do and the student’s signature. • Template available online! • from Collin.edu click on Admissions, Forms, and Permit to Register for Another Person

Tuition • $37 per credit hour for students residing in Collin County=$113 for a 3 credit hr course • $73 per credit hour for student residing out of Collin County=$221 for a 3 credit hr course • $128 per credit hour for out of state or out of country students=$386 for a 3 credit hr course • Free and reduced lunch students

  27. 7. Get Books • You have to buy books in college! • You can find out which books you need by going online to the bookstore’s website a couple of weeks before the semester begins. • You may purchase books from your preferred retailer.

  29. 8. College ID and Parking Sticker • Pick up from a Student Life office on any campus • Both are FREE! • Allows you to use campus services • IDs available one week prior to start of class.
