Background – Who are we? • Imaginist is a specialist consulting company, helping local authorities plan and implement e-Procurement • We are working with local authorities across the UK as they plan their migration to e-procurement • A key part of our work is to help smaller local companies manage the changes required to enable them to continue to supply their public sector and corporate customers
Why change to e-commerce? • Evolutionary Change • driven by technology • Your Buyers are Changing • all implementing e-Procurement • Your Business is under threat • and the early birds are already getting the worms
Why change to e-commerce? (2) • UK public sector is moving to e-procurement • Aggregating low-value spend fewer, larger suppliers • Potentially disadvantaging local SME suppliers • But also has responsibility for economic well-being of local community • SME suppliers not e-ready • 70% have access to internet but only 10% have e-commerce • Broadband availability no longer a constraint • Cost of e-commerce not a barrier • Real problem is lack of time, skills, understanding
So why haven’t you? • This is what companies have told us: • E-commerce is expensive and difficult to implement • Little benefit derived from existing web sites • No understanding of search engines and web marketing • Problems integrating general business with web presence • No understanding of e-procurement • Old out-of-date IT and little IT capability in-house • Not won’t do…can’t do.
So what do you need for e-commerce? • A Basic PC • This technology will work with most computers • An Internet Connection • Broadband is not essential, but it helps! • An Email Address • A simple, free email address such as one fromBT or Freeserve will suffice • An account with an e-commerce service provider • We are using @UK PLC because it is cheap and easy
Cheap and easy e-Commerce:this is what we looked for • Simple to use, self managed web sites • No technical knowledge required • Automatic integration with online merchant facilities • Integrated catalogue management • Automatic submission to search engines • Additional channels to new business
Newham KickStart Project • A scheme to encourage local SMEs to trade online • 150 SMEs e-enabled • Brought together local government with training and support organisations in a joined-up initiative • It works because: • Government as CUSTOMER is telling you to do it (not just government as supporter) • Its cheap and easy • Companies are supported from start to finish • It means more business from ALL your customers
The Portal: eastlondononline.co.uk • Why East London Online? • Business is no respecter of Council boundaries and the new technology is making this even more the case • Newham is committed to playing a leading part in stimulating skills, jobs and economic growth across the whole East London community to which it belongs
CWG and Tower Hamlets College KickStart Project • The first workshop was held last year • The project will provide opportunities for you to develop your online presence • Local customers can find you – and those further away can, too • What do you need to make this change? • E-commerce and broadband
Setting up an e-commerce accountwith @UK PLC could not be easier • You can do it yourself – and we can help you! • Set up your catalogue • from scratch • from an Excel spreadsheet or database • from an accounts package eg Sage • From an existing catalogue • Your catalogue can contain product or service-based items

Editing the website All of the information on your website can be viewed or edited from this central page.
A typical listing A typical website features a homepage, contact page, and product catalogue. You can upload an image or logo for your website.
Edit the site online Simply click ‘edit’ and make your changes – your website will be updated in 5 to 10 minutes
A product listing page This is where the product range is listed, along with a short description of each product.
Editing the product details It’s easy to update your product prices and information as often as you wish.
Change the website look and feel You can change the design of your site by choosing from a number of professionally designed templates.
Ecommerce options You can choose how you receive orders and what methods of payment you accept (eg online banking).
The Purchaser’s order process • Order is created • checks your catalogue entry • gains authorisation • returns approved order • Enters details into accountspackage if required
Order or quote notification by email Full details of your orders/quotes are sent to you via e-mail.
Payment by credit card / account If you have online banking, transactions will occur as soon as orders are placed.
Your eInvoice and delivery note • You can create this invoice either using the Client eCommerce site or if you have Sage Line 50 the invoice is created from your accounts package • The purchaser can also view this invoice online at any time.
All invoices are accessible online The latest transactions page makes it easy to quickly view recent invoices.
Statistics to help manage sales Graphs of sales per month allow you to quickly spot trends
Keep track of orders Information such as total number of customers and total number of transactions is instantly available
