Broadband at Georgetown A schizophrenic review of broadband services and connectivity to regional networks
Broadband at Georgetown Core GU Broadband Mission: • Reliable / Robust broadband suitable to support the disparate needs of the University • -Research Networks • -Internet Access • -Remote access to core applications from off campus sites (MAN) GU RFI Broadband Goals: • Ownership of fiber possible / feasible • If private fiber is not available – search for “deals” • In other words “We want more bandwidth for less $” • Explore all partnership opportunities, new and old • Eliminate reliability on single vendor services and solutions • Improve redundancy / reliability • Increase bandwidth to “appropriate” levels • Stop being “carrier access challenged”
Broadband at GeorgetownRFI - 2002 • Small RFI sent to carriers for ISP and Metro broadband connectivity. Carriers chosen for their different technology offerings- • AT&T Wireless Broadband • Cogent • Verizon • MFN • Yipes
Broadband at GeorgetownRFI Results - 2002 • CASH IS STILL KING! • All carriers were willing to build, but not for free • GU budgets for broadband services are not expanding • LOCAL LOOP IS STILL QUEEN! • No carriers except Verizon had fiber to all sites. • Big hopes for wireless broadband – line of site issues • Some vendors have lower cost solutions but no local loop access • SOME OF OUR OLD PARTNERS HAD NEW TRICKS • Surprisingly cost effective MAN proposal from LEC • SOME OF OUR NEW PARTNERS HAD NEW TRICKS • Surprisingly cost effective ISP proposal from start up company • REASONABLY PRICED DARK FIBER CAN BE FOUND • Surprisingly cost effective dark fiber costs for connectivity to MAX • Just not available at all key locations • FOR GU – THE SCHIZOPHRENIC APPROACH TO BROADBAND CONNECTIVITY HAS MET OUR SHORT TERM (24-36 months) NEEDS
