  4. After Darkness Light and Joy • For • Oppression will end as on the day of Midian • For • Military uniforms will burn! • the word “infantry boot” is a loan word from Assyrian • For • The “birth” of a child heralds the change • Who is “us”?

  5. They Proclaim his Name • Option A: “A Wonder of a strategist, El-the warrior; Everlasting care-giver (Father); Captain of peace” • Option B: • “The warrior God is planning a wonder” • “The everlasting Father is [planning] a captain of peace”

  6. How to make a choice • The passion of Yahweh of the heavenly armies will see to it that this happens. • Names are sentences • The (future) king is not God. • Cf. Jer 23:6 “Yahweh is the source of our vindication.”

  7. Isaiah 11:1-9 • Shoot from stump = dynasty as previously known is over (cf. 10:33-34) • “Jesse” = new king will be a new David • Micah 5:2 But you, Bethlehem…from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel….

  8. Spirit • Saul and David had spirit, but Solomon and his successors…. • “wisdom and understanding” = judicial capacity • “counsel and might” = military strategy • “knowledge” and “fear of Yahweh” = obedience and faithfulness toward God

  9. Social justice = the priority • Can’t be bought • Impervious to flattery (not what the king sees or hears) • Smites the “arrogant” with the rod of his mouth (cf. Rev 19:15) • From the mouth of Jesus comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations • His uniform = righteousness and faithfulness

  10. Transformation of Nature accompanies his rule • Wild and domestic animals at peace; also little child • Violence at an end in Jerusalem • Faith(fulness) as sure and as widespread as the sea

  11. Israel’s Messiah and the Christ • Is the messiah to be God? • Will the messiah die? • Unknown in Old Testament • 2 Esdras 7 • We preach Christ [the messiah] crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block • Already and not yet?

  12. Isaiah 11:10-16 • v. 10 transition from vv 1-9 to 11-16: “root of Jesse”; “nations” (cf. Isa 2) • vv. 11-12 dispersed remnant will be gathered (cf. 10:20-23) • v. 13 unity of the two kingdoms--restores Davidic empire • v. 14 old military expansion of David • vv. 15-16 new Exodus from Egypt and Assyria
