  2. SETTING • London, England- This place is the main setting. The story is taken place here in 1999-2000. The place is new to Alem and the readers because it does not mention many things about London that are detailed. The atmosphere is mostly presented in cold and gray. • Children’s home- The children’s home had a bad atmosphere for Alem because of the bullying and the disordered kids. It was not a safe environment for him. • Fitzgerald’s house- This place was much more safe and welcoming. It was a good atmosphere because of the Fitzgerald’s who helped him become stronger by supporting him throughout the story. • Court- Some very decisive parts took part in the setting. The atmosphere was tense and nervous. It is an important setting because of the turning points that took place here.

  3. CHARACTER • Alem- Alem is the main character of the story and he is the protagonist. He is a developing character because in the start of the book he was a little scared of many things. But then later on he becomes confident and stands up against an entire government. Alem is from Ethiopia and Eritrea. • Alem’s father- He is a static character because he does not change throughout the book. He is still a caring father who loves his son. • British government- The government is the antagonist in the story because it is what Alem is trying to fight. It is a static character because it stays the same besides the laws and thoughts. Alem tries to fight this government because of its thought and laws.

  4. PLOT • Exposition- Alem has to leave Ethiopia and Eritrea because of the war between the two countries. Moves to England as a refugee. • Rising action- Father leaves Alem without warning to go for Alem’s mother. Alem is alone in England. • Climax- England changes their law so refugees cannot stay in the country. So Alem is put in court. • Falling action- kids do an protest against the government so refugees don’t have to leave the country. • Resolution- Alem can stay in the country.

  5. CONFLICT • PREDOMINANT • Man VS. Society- Alem VS. the British government. We thought this was the predominant because the was mostly through out the whole story. The government hadn't treated Alem well from the beginning and later on he wasn’t even aloud to basically live in the country. • Man VS. Fate- he had to face both his mother and fathers deaths.

  6. RESOLUTION • To face the government, Alem and his friends decided to make a protest against the government. They wanted to make the campaign so that people new what was happening to refugees.
