Dear Mom, I’m here in Greece taking a tour of Athens and I stopped by the Gymnasium to see what the education was like. I found out a bunch of things including how they start school at age 6 or 7, and the boys and girls are split up. I also found out that there are 3 major classes at the Gymnasium. Grammatistes taught reading, writing, arithmetic, and literature. Paidotribes taught sports like wrestling and gymnastics. Finally, kitharistes taught music, singing and lyre. There were also these people called sophists who were wealthy young males that tutored children for a high fee. It’s amazing how much our school is like how things were back then. I’ve learned so much about the Athenian culture; I wish you were here with me! Love Your Son, Justin
