Job Characteristics Model JCM consist of five basic core job dimensions. 1.Skill Varity The degree to which a job require a variety of different so the workers can use a number of skills and talent.
2.Task Identity The degree to which a job requires a completion of a whole and identified piece of work. 3.Task Significance The degree to which a job has a substantial impact on the lives or work for other people.
4.Autonomy The degree to which a job provides substantial freedom, independence and discretion to the individuals in scheduling the work and in determing the procedures to be used in carrying it out.
5.Feed back The degree to which carrying the work activities by a job results in the individual obtaining direct and clear information about the effectiveness of his or her work.
First three dimensions skill variety, task identity and task significance combine to create meaningful work. That is , if these characteristics exist in the job, the model predict that the incumbent will view the job as being important, valuable and worthwhile.
The jobs with high autonomy give job incumbent a feeling of personal responsibility for the results And if job provide feed back. Employees will know how effectively they are performing
From Motivational Point Of View The JCM says that individuals obtain internal reward when they learn that they personally have performed well on a task and they care about for higher performance
Motivating Potential Score (MPS) A predictive index that suggests the motivating potential in a job. Which is calculated as follows: MPS= skill variety +task identity +task significance *autonomy*feed back 3
Overall, it appears that jobs that have the intrinsic elements of variety, identity, significance, autonomy and feedback are more satisfying and generate higher performance from the people than jobs that lack these characteristics
How Jobs Can Be Redesigned? Job Rotation: The periodic shifting of an employee from one task to another. Also called Cross training.
Job Enlargement: Increasing the number and variety of tasks that an individual performs . Job enlargement results in jobs with more diversity.
Job Enrichment: The vertical expansion of jobs, which increases the degree to which the worker controls the planning, execution, and evaluation of the work
How management enrich an employee ‘s job Combining tasks Takes an existing and fractionalized tasks and put them Back together to form a new a new module of work Forming natural work units Mean that the tasks an employee does create an identifiable and meaningful work
Establishing client relationships Increases direct relationships between worker And their client Expanding job vertically Gives employees responsibilities and control that were formally reserved for management Opening feedback channel Employees knows how well they are performing
