  1. Photos • Learning about Photography and photos opens up a whole can of worms! • It’s hard to pinpoint information as the field is extremely diverse! • This presentation will be a thorough introduction to the world of Photos!

  2. Film • Developed via alchemical processes. Silver Halide grains act as photon detectors and chemically react to light! • 20 individual layers take up 1/1000th of an inch and allow film to expose to various colours of light (wavelengths). • Most film was designed with specific photo sizes and shutter speeds in mind. Think 35mm 200 Fujifilm!

  4. Digital Cameras • Allow light to hit a semiconductor which records the analog images of photons of light electronically! • A mini computer (CCD or CMOS) then breaks down the electronic recording into digital data… all with the press of a button!

  5. P&S vs. DSLR • P&S or Compact Digital: Point and Shoot! Most of these Digital Cameras have a viewfinder and several options to allow you to manipulate the image shown before taking the picture. • These are the simplest and least expensive cameras you’ll find! They still take great pictures!

  6. DSLR, say what? • DSLR: Digital Single Lens Reflex – these cameras are used by a lot of professional photographers as the options provide as much control as a digital camera can afford! • These cameras often have adjustable lenses, flashes, and many other accessories available!

  8. Camera Features! • Meter: Changes the amount of light entering the camera. • Shutter Speed:Speed and length of time light is allowed entrance, changes exposure to capture faster or slower objects.

  9. Aperture: Think of the iris of your eye dilating and contracting; this is a smaller or larger space for light to enter. A wide aperture allows focus on the object and blurs the background. • Zoom: Zoooooooom! In or out! • Auto-Focus: The lens and shutter/aperture automatically adjust for a more or less nominal picture!

  10. Landscape: Focuses the entire exposed area to capture larger shots in detail. Panoramas, group photos, etc… • Night Time Mode: Engages a flash and pulls more light from the background to help take pictures at night! • Film Speed:Adjusts the camera for film exposure. The longer the exposure, the more reaction to light!

  11. Magnification: Various lenses can be employed to adjust the zoom and take a wider range of photographs! • Remote Release: For Time-Delayed Photos.   12. Camera to Computer • Most digital cameras come with a USB cable • They are generally recognized by the computer as Portable Storage Devices which then show as another drive on your computer – after you press PC or connect on the Camera viewfinder • You can copy files to and from the camera and also delete files from the camera or storage card to give you more space

  13. Software • Some cameras come with a CD or mini disk with programs from their manufacturer • These usually allow for image editing, storage or manipulation • There are LOTS of companies that make cameras and associated software

  14. Scanning • Many scanners can scan photos by turning reflected light off the picture into digital information • You can save pictures or files to your computer after scanning them • This is a great way to preserve older photos in a digital format

  15. Editing Photos • Many programs exist that allow editing of images. Two of them that I really like are: • Adobe Photoshop™ - used by many professionals for photo editing, on the more expensive side • GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) – FREE!

  16. Storage • Digital cameras usually have some built-in storage which allows you to take a few photos • Each camera will have expansion slots for various storage devices such as SD cards, Mini SD, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, etc…

  17. Home computers or laptops also have storage capacity for saving photos • The space a photo takes will depend on its resolution and quality, often able to be changed within the cameras settings BEFORE the picture is taken • The quality that a picture is originally taken with influences how large it can be made without being distorted

  18. Online Photo Storage • Several websites allow for online photo storage, generally for FREE. • Photobucket is one of my favourites: http://photobucket.com/ • Facebook also has an upload feature and stores photos, as well as email folders can hold picture files!

  19. Purchasing Cameras • Cameras vary in many ways! • As with any purchase I would recommend researching your camera purchase to make sure it has all the features you need! • Here’s some help to get your on your way…
