Historical Context. Think about the time period of the story and things like technology, events, or issues related to this particular time frame. How could the author be using the historical context to impact the plot? How is he using characters, events to make a point to the reader?.

  1. Historical Context Think about the time period of the story and things like technology, events, or issues related to this particular time frame. How could the author be using the historical context to impact the plot? How is he using characters, events to make a point to the reader?

  2. Theme • What is the author trying to communicate about human nature through actions or events of the story? • One complete sentence expressing a complete thought from an objective point-of-view (meaning you are writing in 3rd person)

  3. Some examples • Example from The Lord of the Rings: Possession of absolute power has the ability to corrupt people • But NOT preachy like: People shouldn’t be allowed to have complete power or you should always get help to overcome obstacles. TIP: If you find yourself using words like “you” or “should/must”, your theme statement is preachy rather than objective. Stay unbiased. You are drawing a conclusion rather than giving advice.

  4. From the movie Up: Family isn’t necessarily blood relatives, • but not preachy like: You should try to find family outside of blood.

  5. From Finding Nemo: Friendship may be found in unlikely places • but not preachy like: People should/must look outside their regular social circles for friends.

  6. Are These Theme Statements? • Breakdown of socialized behavior • Religion • Fear of the unknown • Loss of identity • Loss of innocence

  7. How to Transfer an Idea into a Theme Statement Idea=Breakdown of socialized behavior Theme=The breakdown of socialized behavior is inevitable without some form of democracy. But not preachy like: Society needs to follow a democracy, or we will eventually turn savage. Idea=Religion Theme= Darkness, as in the jungle in Lord of the Flies, in its original and true form is not evil. As in the Garden of Eden, it is man who turns nature evil and corrupts the dark. But not preachy like: You are human; therefore, you are evil and a corrupter of the innocent.
