The Environmental and Land-based Sector • The sector is worth £47.9bn to the UK economy • Businesses in the sector directly manage 85% of the UK landmass • Over 94% of businesses employ fewer than 5 people and 65% are sole traders • 365,000 businesses • 1 million+ employees • 400,000+ volunteers

  5. Northern Ireland • 19,000 businesses • 63,000 people employed in the sector (9% of the NI workforce) • Land-based and environmental industries account for 22% of all NI businesses

  6. A changing Sector NI workforce Proprietors: • 79% over the age of 45 • 41% being over the age of 50 Employed Staff: • 32% staff between 35–44 years old • 13% being over 45
