Why are we here today? “To anyone who is wondering if they should bother with Professional Registration, the answer is yes. You might not get the benefits straight away and they might not be in the form you expected – but I guarantee you’ll be better for doing it” Source: Engineering Council Website
Myths • You can’t achieve professional registration under 35. • You must have a full Masters degree • You have to sit a special examination. • It’s only relevant for large organisations. • Experience doesn’t count – you have to have a university degree. • It takes years to gain professional registration. • It’s only relevant in the UK. • It’s only for young graduate engineers
Excuses • I’ve been meaning to get round to this for ages, but……. • Sounds good but I hear it’s very complicated. • It won’t make any difference to me in my company. • There are no Professional Engineers in my company • I haven’t had the time. • I started on MPDS…… • I used to be a Member • Its not relevant to me • I don’t do design
Does this apply to you Do you embrace change? Are you creative? Are you adaptable? Are you technically sound? Are you commercially aware? Are you committed to your profession? √ √ √ √ √ √
If you are Professional Registration is right for you!
3 Types of Professional Registration • Chartered Engineer (CEng) • Incorporated Engineer (IEng) • Engineering Technician (Eng Tech)
What will you gain? • International recognition • Create opportunities • Open doors • Ongoing development • Career enhancement • Professional credentials • Influence
What will your employer gain? • Increased credibility • Business opportunities • International Benchmark • Recruitment & retention • Quality Management Systems
The Journey Knowledge & Understanding Professional Registration Competency Development Professional Review
Knowledge & Understanding UK SPEC highlights that there is a route to Professional Registration for all competent engineers
Option 1- Formal Qualifications Eng Tech IEng CEng NC/ND (OND) NVQ3/SVQ3 City and Guilds B TEC SCOTVEC Tech Certificate from Approved Apprentice Programme BEng / BSc MEng HNC/HND Foundation degree + Further Learning BEng (Hons) + Further Learning
Sartor 3 and UK Spec Pre 1987 Pre 1999 Post 1999 If your BEng is pre 1999 (start date) you may meet the academic requirements for CEng BTEC/HNC engineering qualification pre 1987 may meet the academic requirements for IEng Baseline qualification for CEng changed from BEng to MEng BTEC/HND engineering qualification pre 1999 may meet the academic requirements for IEng IF IN DOUBT CHECK WITH US
Option 2 - Alternatives Eng Tech IEng CEng • No formal qualifications required • Work based learning • Qualifications accredited by other recognised Engineering Bodies. • Qualifications in related disciplines (ie physics, mathematics) • Engineering Council Examinations • Comparable International qualifications • National Engineering Qualifications gained prior to UK Spec • Technical report
In Summary If in doubt always check your qualification first membership@imeche.org
Competency Development Competence is: • The ability to perform an activity • Correctly • Safely • Effectively • Consistently
How can it be achieved? • Never underestimate or forget “the day job” • What is and has been done as routine and is often seen as just more everyday activity That’s how it’s done
UK Spec…..U KStandard for Professional Engineering Competence • There are five generic competence headings, with differing requirements for each type of Professional Registration • A) Knowledge and understanding • B) Practical applications • C) Leadership skills • D) Communication and interpersonal skills • E) Professional conduct To become Professionally Registered you must be able to demonstrate having level 3 in 3 of the competencies and level 2 in 2.
Scoring Competence - UK SPEC • Level 1 - Aware • Performs activity with significant supervision and guidance • Performs basic routine tasks; little or no responsibility • Level 2 - Familiar • Performs activity in a range of contexts • Supervision only required in more complex circumstances • Some individual responsibility or autonomy • Level 3 - Skilled • Performs activity in some complex or non routine contexts • Significant responsibility and autonomy – can oversee the work of others • Level 4 - Expert • Performs activity in a wide range of complex or non-routine contexts • Substantial personal autonomy – can develop others in the activity
Professional Review The Process
Paperwork required for Professional Registration • Completed application form • Professional review report • Sponsorship by professional engineers • Development action plan • proof of academic qualifications • attendance at interview
The Professional Review Report • Integral part of the process • A 2000-2500 word report (double spaced and typed) • An opportunity to prove yourself as a Chartered or an Incorporated Engineer using the competences as the benchmark • A confidential document • Written in the first person singular • Do not use acronyms or jargon • Signed by a suitable sponsor • Assessed by the interviewers before your interview
The Professional Review Report • Suggested Structure of A Professional Review Report • must provide evidence of competence acquired through IPD • introduction - brief summary of career • main text - critique of your experience • Suggest you select projects (2 or 3) which demonstrate range and depth of your role and responsibilities
Identify size of project (£) How problems identified & resolved Technical content - depth & breadth Use of new & emerging technologies Safety, quality & environmental issues Your level of responsibility & autonomy Where and how your role fitted in Leadership skills - direct or indirect Any budgetary and/or planning control Technical and commercial restraints Evidence of verbal & written communications skills Learning points Professional Review Report
Professional Review Report The report is all about YOU! so……I did…, I lead….., I organised… • Highlight, for example: • what you have done • where you pushed forward the frontiers of knowledge • where you introduced/worked with new technology • how you saved money • how you worked within the budget, to timescale, and how you were successful
Development Action Plan • short term - 6 months • medium term – 1 year • long term 5 years
The Interview – what is it? • It is mandatory • Not an examination • Not a question and answer session • Not a presentation • Not an ordeal!!
The Interview What is it? • A discussion among 3 professional engineers. • Your platform to verbally demonstrate your competence as a professional engineer. • Lasts about 45 minutes. • You can expect to do 75% of the talking!
What’s Next? • You do not hear your result on the day • Approximately 6-10 weeks • Communicated by post • 91% success rate • Those successful are Elected to MIMechE
