The Adaptation Of E-Learning By Various Stakeholders In The Higher and Tertiary Education Institution ICT James Gwanyangwanya , RorisangMadonko HonsBsc Computer Science
Table of Contents • Background • Problem Statement • Methodology and data collection • Stakeholder Finding • Interaction amongst stakeholders • Recommendations • Conclusions
Background • Global technological change has affected higher and tertiary education through implementation of electronic learning. • WiSeUp – WSU • Variations of electronic learning • Synchronicity • Location • Independence
Background cont… • Stakeholders of WiSeUp at WSU • Those affected by, making use of and involved one way or the other in electronic learning • Students • Instructors • Institutional Management
Problem Statement • With the use of an E-Learning platform at WSU how have the stakeholders managed to adapt to its implementation and the recommendations we would give basing on our findings from the research.
Methodology and data collection • Qualitative Research in the form of • Observations • Written Materials • Interview • Questionnaires • Using this methodology I had the following findings with respect to the stakeholders
Stakeholder Finding - Students • Users of E-Learning without which E-Learning is pointless both the undergrad and post-grad students at WSU • Students are motivated to use E-Learning to again access to educational resources • Skills of literacy are lacking with 1st year students but as you go up illiteracy deteriorates • Moderate skills on critical thinking, research & evaluation of information due to increase in volumes of information that students have access to
Stakeholder Finding - Students • Students are much more independent than in the traditional classroom setting which is good as working independently is a requirement in the employment industry • WiSeUp not so cool in terms of graphics and multimedia, we need cool interactive apps
Stakeholder Finding - Instructors • Just as it is in the traditional classroom that instructors guide & lead the learning experience so is the case in E-Learning • Used to the traditional teaching environment and thus are reluctant to change • Instructors using E-Learning because institution makes it a prerequisite and thus no choice
Stakeholder Finding - Instructors • Have an interest in technology mediated learning especially from FSET • New skills and amount of time to create, administer and deliver electronic courses to students • Shift from instructor being primary source of student’s knowledge to being manager of student’s knowledge & resources • Concern on the acceptance and adaptation of E-Learning tools by their students
Stakeholder Finding – Institution Management • Geographic boundaries are broken as WSU management has facilitated E-Learning • Budgetary restrictions are an issue for institutions, but thanks to NUFFIC who have alienated this with the funding of this project • Various departments all making use of the WiSeUp platform hence issues of integrating cross departmental solutions are not an issue • Upgrades in future since E-Learning is already going m-learning
Stakeholder Finding – Institution Management • Resources in the form of equipedclassrooms, sufficient bandwidth, support staff
Recommendations • Compulsory literacy courses for all first year students • Instructors and designers should vary content to make use of fun, interactive, multimedia tools for E-Learning • In about 3-5 years lets look towards acquisition of Blackboard Mobile • Skills development for both students and instructors • Encourage instructors to embrace E-Learning • Increase resources used for E-Learning • Open-source courseware
Conclusion E-Learning at Walter Sisulu University has been well adapted by stakeholders through the use of WiSeUp. This is seen by the increased participation of these stakeholders in WiSeUp from 2008 during its pilot up to now 2011 where its in full swing. Continued improvement however is required as this will help galvanise the goal of WiSeUp implementation which is to enhance the overall learning experience of stakeholders. Students and Instructors should participate as proactively as possible providing improvement on the current implementation.
