When do you wear safety goggles? • When handling acids or bases. • Dealing with an open flame. • When doing an activity that could harm your eyes.
Heat • A hot plate is the best source of heat. • Make sure all glassware is heat resistant and is not chipped or cracked. • Use a hot plate instead of an open flame.
Food and Drinks • Never taste materials in the lab. • Never eat or drink anything while doing a lab activity.
Cords • Do not have cords where someone can trip. • Do not let cords hang from a table edge so that equipment can be pulled down and broken. • Do not use equipment with frayed cords
Sharps • Never use a double edge razor blades, knives, or other sharp instruments for cutting in lab
Disposal • Do not dispose of lab waste in the trash can. • Check with the teacher before disposing of any materials.
Clean Up • Done at the end of every lab activity • Turn off water, hot plates, and other burners if used. • Put away equipment • Clean up work area • WASH hands
