  2. Fume Hood • In the classroom • Vented, protected lab space used for dangerous or toxic experiments • Waste chemicals are stored here for safety

  3. Fire Extinguisher • In the classroom • Rated for all types of fires • Use in an EMERGENCY only

  4. Fire Blanket • In the classroom • For use on PEOPLE • Roll the person up, pat them down • Use in an EMERGENCY only

  5. Eye Wash Station • In the classroom • Harmful chemicals – you must rinse for 15 minutes • Hold your eye(s) open with your hands and use your arm to depress the lever • Avoid wearing contacts during labs

  6. Sand Bucket • In the classoom • Dump a large portion of sand onto a small fire to smother it

  7. Broken Glass Bucket • In the classroom • Specific container for broken glass ONLY • Broken glass NEVER goes in the regular garbage can • NEVER touch the broken glass – the teacher will sweep it up Broken Glass ONLY

  8. Dust Pan and Broom • In the classroom • Use for sweeping up broken glass

  9. Lab Coats/ Aprons • In the classroom • Must be work during all labs and activities that involve chemicals • Replace ON HOOK

  10. Goggles • In the classroom • Must be work during all labs and activities that involve chemicals • Must be worn with or without regular glasses • Replace IN DRAWER

  11. Sinks, Soap and Paper Towels • Located throughout the classroom • Glassware needs to be cleaned after every lab or activity • Hands must be washed after every lab or activity

  12. School Fire Alarm • Stay calm • Turn off/unplug any heat source • Calmly exit the room and building following the evacuation route • Line up with the teacher on the field • Get counted, stay put!

  13. School Code Red • Stay calm • Turn off/unplug any heat source • Calmly close any windows, blinds or doors you are close to • Move away from the windows and doors • Stay quiet

  14. Small Fire • Stay calm • Alert the teacher • Smother the fire quickly • Place a lid/beaker over it • Drop it in the sink and turn the water on • Dump sand on it • Use the fire extinguisher • If the fire cannot be controlled, exit the classroom and pull the fire alarm

  15. Chemical Spill • Stay calm • Alert the teacher • If it is ON you – rinse for 15 minutes • If it is at your station • Neutralize the chemical (if needed) • Clean up the spill safely • Dispose as directed • Sweep up any broken glass and dispose in the broken glass bucket

  16. Chemical Disposal • NEVER put any unused chemicals back into their original containers • Pour chemicals into the labeled waste containers located in the fume hood • NEVER put any chemical in the sink unless specifically told to do so

  17. Pre-Lab or Activity • ALWAYS read the procedure and understand what you are doing • Clear off your workspace

  18. Post-Lab or Activity • Dispose of chemicals properly • Clean and return and equipment • Wash your hands with soap
